VERA MENCHIK
(born Feb-16-1906, died Jun-26-1944, 38 years old) Russia (federation/nationality United Kingdom)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Vera Francevna Menchik Stevenson was born to English and Czech parents, in Moscow. She learned the game at nine and, after her family settled in England in 1921, she began taking lessons from Geza Maroczy. Her positional style and endgame expertise netted her victories against several notable male players, among them Max Euwe (twice), Samuel Reshevsky and Mir Sultan Khan.

Albert Becker quipped at the outset of Karlsbad (1929) that any men she defeated should be deemed members of the "Vera Menchik Club." He promptly became its first member. She was married to Rufus Henry Streatfeild Stevenson from 1937 until his death in 1943.

Vera Menchik was Women's World Champion from 1927 until 1944, when a German V1 rocket destroyed her London residence, killing her, her mother and her sister Olga Menchik. She is considered one of the greatest women players.

Apr-30-03  Rovieira: Vera was born in Russia though her father was british and her mother czech . I had no idea how strong she was untill I found out about her games with Capablanca and Rubinstein . What a great woman , what a tragic end .
Jan-30-04  bunti: how did it end for her?
Jan-30-04  Dick Brain: <Rovierira>Which of her games with Capablanca impressed you? All 9 of her games against Capa in this database show her getting burnt to a crisp.

<bunti>She is believed to have died due to German bombing of London in WWII.

Mar-26-04  suenteus po 147: <Dick Brain> It's possible to admire a player who loses brilliantly against a superior opponent.
Mar-27-04  ruylopez900: Do people know if, and how long, Menchik was Womens WC? Also Who was the first to join the Vera Menchik Club (I believe it was Becker at Carlsbad but I'm not sure)
Mar-27-04  electricknight: Do people know if, and how long, Menchik was Womens WC?

She won the Womens World Championship
when she was 21 years old in July 1927
in London perfect score 5.0 and
remained undefeated champion until she was killed during a bombing raid June 26th 1944.

You asked who was the first to join
the Vera Menchik Club? well that was
a Master Albert Becker he wanted to
humilate any master who was beaten
by her. Irony was he was defeated
himself and was the 1st.........

Mar-27-04  popski: If she won Euwe and other excellent players, then you can't say she wasn't good.
Mar-27-04  ruylopez900: Yes, I know. she was quite skilled, comparable to Judit Polgar, though in a world that was quite unaccepting of females as such.
Sep-28-04  nikolaas: Wikipedia dutch says about her:"...She won a game against Euwe in 1956.(...)She died in a bombardement in 1944." Spooky!
Sep-28-04  percyblakeney: Well, if Maroczy could lose against Korchnoi in 1993... http://www.rochadekuppenheim.de/mek...

mahmoudkubba: like when it is a parabola place or a hyperpola time curves..
Sep-28-04  Shah Mat: she beat Sultan Khan Mir for god's sake. that is nothing to be scoffed at...one of the few men who outplayed Capa.

keypusher: She was quite skilled, but comparable to Judit Polgar? Come on. Right now Polgar is one of the top 10-20 players in the world. Menchik's top placing was #42 (most of the time she was much lower), at a time when competition was less fierce than today. See http://www.chessmetrics.com/PL/PL31...
Sep-29-04  Shah Mat: fair enough...but it was much harder to study the game in menchiks time. Ok, lets forget for a moment that there was a much larger gender bias in the 30s. Polgar's dad is a chess coach, he brought all his daughters up playing the game since they were barely out of the diaper, and Polgar has access to huge databases of information and material in both literature and on disk that Menchik never had. *shrug* draw your own conclusion as to who is more naturally talented, as opposed to say, bookishly or technically accurate, and I think Menchik will take the cake. This is in no way an invalidation of J Polgar's commitment to the game, her talent, or her play. Just my opinion.
Oct-02-04  WMD: <<bunti>She is believed to have died due to German bombing of London in WWII.>

Her house in Clapham was hit by a V1 or V2 rocket.

offramp: Menchik's results in World Championships:

1927 London +10 -0 =1 12 players
1930 Hamburg +6 -1 =1 5 players
1931 Prague +8 -0 =0 5 players
1933 Folkestone +14 -0 =0 8 players
1935 Warsaw +9 -0 =0 10 players Round Robin
1937 Stockholm +14 -0 =0 26 players Swiss
1939 Buenos Aires +17 -0 =2 20 players Round Robin

I make that +71 -1 =4 in tournaments.

Also, in 1937 in Semmering +9 -2 =5 title match v Graf.

(: ♗B :)

(Though I don't think a woman could be a "Ms." in her time!)

Feb-13-05  WMD: The question regarding whether Menchik died in London or Kent seems to be positively settled in favour of the former.

'A V1 rocket fell on a house in Gauden Road, Clapham, London, that was the residence of Russian-born Vera Menchik, her younger sister and their mother. The trio were sheltering in the cellar, as they usually did during the Nazi air raids on London. The house was completely destroyed. The air-raid shelter in the garden was all that was left.'   Benzol: <chessgames.com> Would you please do an editorial job on this bio. The information is correct but it's presentation isn't right.

Benzol: <iron maiden> Brilliant and much better than my original. Thanks mate! I originally wanted to include the information about her husband and her sister who was also a strong player but the bio came out in a very clumsy form.

Incidentally are there any games of her sister's available anywhere?

Jul-02-05  sneaky pete: The Menchik Club is a men-only-affair. I strongly protest against the inclusion of 27 games with women in the Game Collection.
