TOMI NYBACK
(born Apr-03-1985, 40 years old) Finland

[what is this?]

Tomi Nybäck was born in Järvenpää. He became the youngest ever Finnish grandmaster in 2003. With his strong 8/11 performance in the European Championship (2008), just half a point behind winner Sergei Tiviakov, Nybäck qualified for the World Cup (2009). In 2008, Nybäck won the Finnish championship with an unprecedented score of 9/9. In the European Championship (2009) he again scored 8/11, sharing 1st place in regulation, but was knocked out in the 1st round of an 11-player playoff to decide the medals. He was knocked out in the second round of the World Cup (2009) by Peter Svidler.

Oct-15-09  jon01: Nyback has been invited to Corus B group in 2010.

Oct-19-09  paavoh: Great news, thanks <Jon01>!
Oct-27-09  paavoh: Tomi just beat Korchnoi in the ETCC 2009 tournament!
Nov-05-09  paavoh: Next stop is the World Cup 2009, he is paired with GM Andreikin, Dmitry RUS - GM Nyback, Tomi FIN
Nov-05-09  znnnk: whoever wins in Nyback-Andreikin will likely face off with Peter Svidler in the next round.
Nov-22-09  jon01: What a win against Andreikin in the first game, too bad Nyback dropped a piece in the second one.
Nov-24-09  paavoh: The Nybäck-Andreikin games were exciting.
Svidler up next!
Nov-24-09  Appaz: Congratulations to Tomi for winning the first game against Svidler!

This guy is 2700-material.

JointheArmy: This guy has alot of great wins. Carlsen, Svidler and Kamsky.
Nov-24-09  Sbetsho: Tomi's play with black is lacking, I am sure Svidler will make a comeback in the second game and it'll go to tiebreaks.

Jan-04-10  paavoh: Happy New Year everyone! FIDE rating list Jan-2010 has Tomi at #97 with 2643.
Jan-04-10  FHBradley: Now he should sit down and learn play with the black pieces, and then everything would be fine for him. The next test will be Corus-B
Jan-20-10  anatman: At Corus B he has now won two games as black and lost two as white...
Jan-20-10  FHBradley: <anatman:> Indeed, it seems like he has followed my advice, but has meanwhile forgotten how to score points with the white pieces. Now he should sit down and remind himself how to win with the white pieces, and then everything would be fine for him. The next test will be l'Ami in round five.
Jan-20-10  heathenmaster: I'm absolutely sure he wins tomorrow
Jan-20-10  FHBradley: I'm not; but I very much hope so.
Jan-20-10  paavoh: He has an uncompromising style, doesn't he? The only player in Corus B with no draws. Win with white, draw with black - he is not sticking to that old adage, for sure.
Jan-23-10  FHBradley: A disappointment so far with a total of 2.5/6 and a poor 0.5/4 with white pieces. There are good times and then there are bad times for Mr. Nyback. Corus-B seems to be more of the latter. But seven rounds remain.
Jan-27-10  paavoh: @FHBradley: I have to agree with your assessment of Tomi's game with Black pieces after seeing yesterday's Naiditsch-Nyback game in Corus B. The 16.- Qxb2 was a bad sign, IMO. Seeking for activity is fine but perhaps by other means is better?!
Jan-27-10  paavoh: Actually, <frogbert> had a nice comment on Nakamura page after him losing to Karjakin that could apply to Tomi as well:

"...in conclusion, i think it's about two things: 1) increasing the accuracy of your play - which comes rather naturally if you experience being punished for small mistakes more often, and 2) learning to judge more correctly when a position can be pressed for more, and when one should be comfortable with a draw as the most likely outcome..."

Well said!

Jan-27-10  licuan: Corus B. Wesley So vs Tomi Nyback this AM
Mar-11-10  paavoh: A rather horrible start for Tomi in the EICC 2010 +1, -1, =2. The poor streak from Corus B is extended. Perhaps he is playing poker a lot and this shows in his game now?
Mar-11-10  Shams: <paavoh> 50% is not "horrible".
Mar-11-10  paavoh: @shams: look at the opponent ratings, he seems to be underperforming considering that he has been among the top 10 in previous editions of EICC. Beating Kamsky and drawing with Shirov and Bacrot in one earlier tourney appears to be a bit better, don't you think?
