Mar-03-05  pazzed paun: <abadba> I think you are right and I have a few guesses- most of these women are European not American but I think it represents a cultural shift. You can be an attractavie looking woman and also be smart!!(post third wave feminism)
if you are not in the entertainment industry, i.e. Paris Hilton ,Jessica Simpson ,Brittany Spears-being young and acting vapid is not intersting anymore!! an exception would be 23 y.o. Natalie Portman who says most of her friends are investment bankers!!
Mar-03-05  pazzed paun: JUST to mix it up a bit-most of these women look no different than dozens of women you would see on a college campus or a mall-so over emphasing the looks part helps noone. or (GET A LIFE!)
Mar-03-05  hintza: <GET A LIFE!> No, get a <LIFE Master>!
Mar-03-05  Dionyseus: <pazzed paun> Yea, but how many of them beautiful women actually play chess? That's what makes Elisabeth even more attractive.
Mar-03-05  pazzed paun: <dionyseus> You have good point!! I just had a brainstorm. I will become the first personal trainer and chess coach to good looking women clients!
Mar-03-05  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <pazzed paun> Reminds me of an exchange in a Woody Allen movie that went something like this:

"What do you do?"

"I work at a strip club, helping the women get in and out of their costumes."

"What's the money?"

"Thirty dollars a month--it's all I could afford."

I believe Woody was playing chess in this scene. He would pretend that he saw someone behind his opponent and wave hello. When the opponent turned around to look, he would grab an enemy piece and chuck it off the board.

Mar-04-05  Halfpricemidge: She can train me anyday.
Mar-05-05  pazzed paun: <Dionysues> <abadba> checkout this profile of an attractive U.S>born media-savy female chessplayer <LISA LANE> (from forty years ago!) It has only taken 35 plus years to find a replacement!
Oct-13-05  Bartleby: http://www.digitas.harvard.edu/~per...

An interesting article by some online zine called the Harvard Perspective about the rise of hip young female stars in chess, covering their summary objectification into sex-symbols within the field. It also debates the reasons, including sponsorship difficulties in professional chess, some (like Kostentiuk) who scrupulously exploit the sex card to attract money, as has been well-covered by chessbase and is easily evidenced by her personal website.

The article is three years old but still a good read; it covers Paehtz's involvement in some publicity stunt billed "Duel of the Graces" which involved a match with Kosteniuk where the press covering it paid inordinate attention to the girls' beauty habits as opposed to their middle-game preferences. Some players here might get nostalgic or else feel smug at the reference to the Prague agreement back when everyone thought FIDE was actually going to pull through with it to reunify the fractured chess kingdom.

Nov-19-05  Akavall: Do you guys find Pähtz ugly or good looking? I for some reason can't make up my mind...

chancho: She looks fine to me.
Nov-19-05  Udit Narayan: Definitely ugly!

But don't let my post influence your decision!

tpstar: Thumbs up here. And she looks even better in her Dominatrix attire. She's got style.

I'm sure she's a fine player too. =)

Nov-19-05  Udit Narayan: I can't take this anymore. Why can't we just treat women the equals of men? Come on people! Even in chess, which is a noble game, we have to discriminate against women by linking their looks to their chess playing ability or intelligence. One has to understand that there is no relationship between the two!

I am sick and tired of this childish behaviour.

cu8sfan: <Akavall> <out of modern players I root for Morozevich.> Do you think Moro is good looking? Do you want to talk about it?
Nov-20-05  Akavall: <cu8sfan> I am heterosexual, so I don't want to talk about Morozevich. But if it interests you...

cu8sfan: <Akavall> It's just the same all the time, female chess players need the looks, male players just need to be good players...
