Baskaran Adhiban is a grandmaster from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and is one of India's elite players with a rating consistently over 2600.
Grandmaster norms
He gained his GM norms at the Indian National Championship in 2009, the international grandmaster tournament in Bhuvaneswar in 2010 and at the Olomouc Chess Summer Tournament in August 2010. He gained the GM title at the completion of the last named event as he had already been rated over 2500 when he gained his 3rd GM norm.
Championships
<Youth> In October 2008, he won the U16 World Youth Championship.
<National> He was the youngest ever champion of the Indian national 'B' championships, which he won in September 2008. Winner of the 47th Premier National Chess Championship 2009 with 10/13.
<Continental> =2nd (5th on tiebreak) at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship qualifying to play in the World Cup (2013). He was 2nd at the 2014 Asian Continental Championship behind Chinese wunderkind Yu Yangyi.
<World> In the 2013 World Cup, he defeated Evgeny Alekseev in the first round and Alexandr Hilario Takeda dos Santos Fier in the second round but was defeated by US super-GM Hikaru Nakamura in the next one. His results at the 2014 Asian Continental Championship qualified him to compete in the World Cup (2015) where he was eliminated from the event in the first round's first set of rapid tiebreakers by Russian GM Vladimir Fedoseev. He was again selected in 2017 for the World Cup by nomination of FIDE(5).
Standard Tournaments
Adhiban won the Olomouc Chess Summer 2010 GM-2 tournament with 7/10 and came =1st at the 2nd SCS International Open Grand Master Chess Tournament 2010. He also won the Cultural Village Schaaktoernooi 2011 tournament held in the Netherlands with 6.5 points from 9 games. A few weeks after the 2013 World Cup, he took outright first with 8.5/10 in the powerful Hostafrancs Open in Barcelona ahead of many GMS, including six rated over 2600.
He came =2nd at the Zalakaros Open 2015 (4th on tiebreaks) with a score of 6.5/9 (+4,-0,=5). In July 2015, he won the powerful Benasque Open with 8.5/10, half a point clear of a trailing pack of six grandmasters, who in turn led 24 other grandmasters and numerous IMs and other masters. Team events (3)
<U16 Olympiads> Adhiban was top board for the Indian team at the 2006 U16 Olympiad staged in Agri in India. He was also top board in the gold medal winning Indian teams that were fielded in the U-16 World Olympiads in Singapore in 2007 and in Turkey in 2008.
<Olympiads> He played reserve for India at the Chess Olympiad (2010). He played board 4 for India at the Chess Olympiad (2014) held in Tromsø, his 7/10 being an important component of India winning the bronze medal for the first time.
<Regional and World Team Championships> Adhiban played reserve for the bronze-medal winning Indian team at the 16th Asian Games (Men Teams) (2010). He was top board for India 2 at the 2009 Asian Team Championship, helping his team to 5th place and scoring 5th for his board. At the 2014 Asian Team Championship, he played board 2 for his country, this time helping his country to team silver, and again placing 5th for his board. He was also the second reserve for India at the World Team Championship (2010), and assisted his team to win the bronze medal.
Other
Adhiban works for Indian Oil at Chennai and is trained by Kameswaran Visweswaran. (4)
