Penguincw: Congrats to Baskaran Adhiban for his performance at the Zalakaros Open. He took 2nd place (4th on tiebreaks) with a score of 6.5/9 (+4,-0,=5) and gained 3.5 rating points (now at 2639.5).
Jul-13-15  sonia91: Winner of the 35th Open de "Villa Benasque" with 8,5/10:

Aug-23-15  jith1207: Adhiban was born in same small town as Vishy Anand and their mothers grew up there (Just like I did in same town). Adhiban later moved to the city and grew up in Chennai, for learning and playing Chess, getting to the level of GrandMaster, just as former world champion did (with the exception of Anand learning some trade in Phillipines in young age).

There are striking similarities and coincidences in both of their lives.

Here's expecting Adhiban reaches 2700+ mark and stays up there among the elite for years to come!

tamar: Hopefully Adhiban can report on his games in the Asia Nations Cup, as he did for Tata Steel.

That report was one of my favorites http://en.chessbase.com/post/adhiba...

PawnSac: < wordfunph: "He is a gifted tactician. Last year I was matched against him in a team tournament. I played the Gruenfeld and Adhiban played h2-h4 and mated me in 20 moves as if I was not there. It was as if he was giving a simul." - GM Peter Svidler >

Yes he is a sharp tactician and creative. When he smooths out some of the bumps in the road i expect we will see him climb up the list. But the only game between Peter and Bask in the database..

Baskaran Adhiban vs Peter Svidler
Tradewise Gibraltar (2015) · Gruenfeld Defense: Exchange Variation (D85) · 1/2-1/2

..is a draw. Was Peter thinking of someone else? hmmm. will have to do some investigation.

Jan-20-17  JASAHA: I think Svidler was probably thinking of Harikrishna vs Svidler, 2008 Here he lost in 27 moves.
Jan-22-17  jith1207: Chessgames does not have whole lot of games in, even as they are doing a tremendous job, especially as of late. If Svidler talks like that, he probably is not talking about a different person. Time to check out other chess databases.

But among Aadhiban's miniatures, my favourite is the one he won in 20 moves against Wei Yi.

Jan-28-17  Conrad93: He's gained 23 points and jumped up 36 places. Adhiban is doing pretty well.

Penguincw: Adhiban will be leading India at the World Team Chess Championship.

https://www.business-standard.com/a...

Mar-11-19  jith1207: And, 5 rounds into the World Team championship, Adhiban reached the 2700 club for his first time, gaining 17.5 points so far in the tournament.

The rating might fluctuate for a while, but for time being he becomes 4th Indian chess grand master to be featured in 2700 club at the same time, which is also the first time for the country.

offramp: He was spotted wearing a watch (analogue) during the National Teams Chess Championships in Ahmedabad, India.

His opponent, C R G Krishna, pointed it out and Baskaran Adhiban forfeited the game.

Harsh!

  Sally Simpson: ***

What a miserable way to claim a win. Running to a jobs worth because an opponent is wearing a watch.

How can you look an opponent in the eye after stealing a win in such a way. Honestly I would have leaned across the board and said you may get into trouble if someone spots you wearing a watch.

(Or sac my entire chess and one move from being mated point to their watch and offer a draw.)

Examine the watch and give a warning perhaps with a time pemalty(!) was the sensible option.

I had good watch once. Dust Proof, Rust Proof, Water Proof and Shock Proof.

It caught on fire!
