Sep-22-06 | | jamesmaskell: I meet this opening very frequently. Perhaps because while its drawish at International level, at club level it can be spiced up. I dont play it as White, instead going for my Ruy Exchange instead. As Black though as long as I can hold back Whites initial assault, I can attack through the Queenside. At least it worked last night (I wish I had the moves written down but it was 15 minute quickplay). In positions like that it gets very complex very quickly even for an e4 opening. Black can hold it and counter-attack but its not easy. |

Feb-27-07 | | SirBruce: Many years ago, I had Power Chess on my computer (WChess engine) and it preferred to teach the Giouco Piano and I got to hate it. After learning the many ways Black can blunder, it seems with good play this opening is highly drawish and often a bore. I prefer the Ruy Lopez now, I suppose because it puts pressure on c6-d7-e8 or forces black to weaken his queenside early. |

 | | WannaBe: Opening of the day, I know there is a 'quiet' version. Too bad that there isn't a quadruple-forte version!!!! :-)) |
Jan-29-09 | | blacksburg: i'm not scared of you, silly giouiuouuoiuoco piano. i'm way more scared of the evans gambit. |
Jan-29-09 | | MaxxLange: You know what's good fun in blitz? The King's Gambit Declined in Evans Gambit style: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3 Nf3 d6 4. b4!? |
Jan-29-09 | | blacksburg: i am also more scared of max lange than guiouiououiioco piano. |
Mar-06-09 | | FiveofSwords: well the guioiuocci piano really is not different from ANY opening in the sense that if black is familiar with the opening and knows what mistakes not to make then hes not going to wind up in a bad position. The game doesnt have to be decided by the opening, however. Anyway, nobody is prepared for every opening. If you see your opponent just happen to play the right moves agiainst your opening then simply tip your hat to his dilligent work ethic and then demolish him in the equal endgame. This opening is not my main weapon by a long shot but its easy to learn and if im in the mood i'll test anyone with the guicco piano - if I see they have a nice line against all 6 or 7 of the tries for white that I know, ill just remember that and not play it against them anymore. |
Mar-07-09 | | chessman95: Yeah, the Guioiuoiuco (I still don't know how to pronounce that!) Piano is pretty easy to equalize against. Personally, I think the best choices for white are the max lange and evans gambits, which I both consider to be sound. They are annoying to play against as black, and fun to play as white. |
Mar-07-09 | | blacksburg: it's because of guys like you two that i spend all my time worrying about the max lange and the evans gambit and still don't know anything about the ruy lopez. :( |
Mar-08-09 | | Red October: or you could take up the Latvian Gambit and not learn any of those 3 |
Mar-08-09 | | geniokov: You can tame Giuco Piano by playing Two Knight´s Defense!...Best against this opening. |
Mar-08-09 | | chessman95: You can always just play the Petroff Defense to avoid all that theory, or even the Elephant Gambit (!!!!) :) |
Mar-09-09 | | blacksburg: maybe i should just go back to the Scandinavian (B01). |
Mar-09-09 | | Red October: these Scandinavians are crazy..

 | | tpstar: "The Giuoco Piano ('quiet game') is one of the oldest chess openings, dating back to the fifteenth century in Italy, so it is also called the Italian Game. White aims to dominate the board right from the start by establishing pawns at e4 and d4, which is a classic center; meanwhile, Black aims for counterplay with standard development leading to the freeing … d5 move. I.A. Horowitz famously branded the Giuoco Piano 'wild and woolly' due to the immediate clash in the center with tricks and tactics for both sides. The opening phase begins with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 which is sound development all around; knights on their best squares, and bishops pointing straight at their opponent's weakness on f7 & f2. Now 4. c3 leads to the main line Giuoco Piano, while 4. d3 is known as the Giuoco Pianissimo ('very quiet game') and 4. b4!? is the Evans Gambit." Tony Palmer, "Chess Life for Kids" August 2010
