Jan-10-19  dumbgai: I miss when Corus/Tata had 3 groups. The B group would always be a very strong tournament in its own right, where all players were 2600+ and a few would be 2700+. Nowadays the challengers tournament feels more like the old C group.

That was nice indeed. But it was only for a quite limited time that was the case, no? Even the B group is rather new, taking the history of the tournament into consideration.

1960 was the first year that a World Champion apart from Euwe played - future WC Petrosian shared first with Larsen that year. The latter half of the 1950's had seen increasingly strong foreign players, but we may say that from 1960 onwards Hoogovens became one of the really important annual tournaments. Still, some editions were not very strong, e.g. 1962 and 1974.

Sargon: Round 1 games are up for both the Tata Steel Masters (2019) and Tata Steel Challengers (2019) groups...
Jan-17-19  botvinnik64: Some very interesting game in the Challenger's section, no less competitive than the Masters. "Old Man" (ahem, he's Only 52!) Bareev is in the hunt, but I think Korobov will prevail - he should win this with his class and experience. Great to see so many fighting games in that section.
Jan-20-19  Chessdreamer: Maghsoodloo - Chigaev 0-1 (81 moves) and Kovalev - Saduakassova 1-0 (69) from round 6 not yet here.
Jan-20-19  HSOL: Troller: There might have been a hiatus of a B group 1978-1980, other than that I have a B group for every year since 1963 in my database. 1993 and 1995 are sort of exceptions with an Open, but then again there wasn't a round robin for the "top" group either those years.
Jan-20-19  diceman: Why are there two Bareevs?
Jan-20-19  rogge: They are probably related

Ah - I thought actually 1981 was the first year. Still of course, the tournament began already before WWII.

Also I have seen that Stefan Kuipers qualified for the B-group through one of the lower groups last year, so in practise we may talk about 3 "promotable" groups still - although there are only 2 closed groups and a plethora of different opens.

Jan-23-19  paavoh: Parham beat Bareev in round 10 by a whirlwind attack:

Jan-26-19  paavoh: Kovalev passed through the 2700 barrier for the first time, congratulations!
Jan-26-19  0o0o0o0o0: I was interested to see how the younger players - Maghsoodloo, Keymer and Praggnanandhaa would do - turns out it is Esipenko that has stolen the show - this kid was not even on my radar until now. No matter what happens tomorrow he has had a fantastic tournament.
Jan-27-19  jith1207: Yes, congrats to new member in 2700 club.

His result sequence in this tournament :

3 draws, 3 wins, 3 draws, 4 wins.

Jan-27-19  jith1207: Congrats on 100th kibbutz <0o0o0o0o0>.

Now leave my shadow alone.

Jan-27-19  0o0o0o0o0: <jith1207> Ha, did not even know that was happening. But 101 is the most frightening :)
Jan-31-19  jith1207: For whom? ;)
