Tata Steel Challengers (2019) The 2019 Tata Steel Challengers took place from 12-27 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The 14-player round-robin offered the winner an automatic place in the 2020 Tata Steel Masters. The time control was 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. The B group would always be a very strong tournament in its own right, where all players were 2600+ and a few would be 2700+. Nowadays the challengers tournament feels more like the old C group. Even the B group is rather new, taking the history of the tournament into consideration. 1960 was the first year that a World Champion apart from Euwe played - future WC Petrosian shared first with Larsen that year. The latter half of the 1950's had seen increasingly strong foreign players, but we may say that from 1960 onwards Hoogovens became one of the really important annual tournaments. Still, some editions were not very strong, e.g. 1962 and 1974. Jan-13-19    Sargon: Round 1 games are up for both the Tata Steel Masters (2019) and Tata Steel Challengers (2019) groups... Jan-17-19    botvinnik64: Some very interesting game in the Challenger's section, no less competitive than the Masters. "Old Man" (ahem, he's Only 52!) Bareev is in the hunt, but I think Korobov will prevail - he should win this with his class and experience. Great to see so many fighting games in that section. Still of course, the tournament began already before WWII. Also I have seen that Stefan Kuipers qualified for the B-group through one of the lower groups last year, so in practise we may talk about 3 "promotable" groups still - although there are only 2 closed groups and a plethora of different opens.
