< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 7 OF 14 ·  Later Kibitzing>
Aug-20-06  suenteus po 147: D'oh! Game was drawn.
Aug-22-06  VargPOD: In Rising Stars vs. Experience so far: four games - four draws, and not a slightest attempt to win with white pieces in either game. The Drawing Grandmaster in deed.
Aug-22-06  sixfeetunder: Winning isn't everything but losing is nothing.
Aug-25-06  TIMER: His name appears very similar to the famous Adolf Anderssen who was the last unofficial champion before it became official with Steinitz.
Aug-26-06  sixfeetunder: But his style definitely isn't.
Aug-26-06  acirce: <In Rising Stars vs. Experience so far: four games - four draws, and not a slightest attempt to win with white pieces in either game.> Then why did he turn down Smeets' early draw offer in Ulf Andersson vs J Smeets, 2006?
Aug-26-06  suenteus po 147: <acirce> Thanks for drawing attention to that game. It seems in recent kibitzer comments (here as well as tournament and game pages) that a lack of wins indicates a lack of motivation <to win>. This is simply not true. Chess at the level we see in these GM tournaments is of the kind that winning is very difficult. Just because a GM has an inclination to draw even or unclear games doesn't translate into a lack of motivation to win. There are many other factors to consider.
Aug-31-06  VargPOD: <acirce>, I agree partially, but although the game mentioned lasted long, Andersson's game wasn't very active. He mainly suffled his bishop back and forth e1-f2-g3, waiting for Smeets to commit an error. That's his style, I know, but still.

Don't get me wrong here, people, I like Andersson, and I think we all can learn about his positional and defensive play. A drawing player can be an excellent player, like Ulf. I was just disappointed at his performance at the Rising Stars vs. Experience, his style seems to have become even more passive. I think it's his age catching up.

Aug-31-06  Zenchess: But still, he had results like this even in his prime. It's not just age. I think it is his style.
Sep-01-06  Maatalkko: Speaking of Andersson's style, check out his astounding record against Ribli. That's the most I've ever seen (although Fritz8's database shows 1 win for Ribli in 1973, Ribli at least had quite a few decisive games).
Sep-30-06  Uzi: <About a week ago the International Correspondence Chess Federation published its latest ratings. Number one is Joop van Oosterom, sponsor of this Rising Stars vs. Experience tournament and of many other chess events. Second on the list is Andersson.

Actually it is generally assumed that as a correspondence player ‘Van Oosterom’ is a collective pseudonym of a group of grandmasters playing under his name, so as an individual player Andersson may actually be the highest rated. He can analyse wild positions as no other, but over the board he tries to avoid them.

He told me that his Swedish compatriots had not wanted him on the Olympic team because of his super-solid style. Rather insolent towards the greatest Swedish chessplayer in history, I would say. “I may be too cautious, but on the other hand I am not losing games like an idiot within 20 moves, like you,” Ulf had said to one of the Swedish players.>

Nov-24-06  suenteus po 147: <Uzi: "...but on the other hand I am not losing games like an idiot within 20 moves, like you,” Ulf had said to one of the Swedish players.> LOL, that's great! Good for Ulf!
Jan-26-07  bob000: If Ulf still undefeated in correspondance chess?
Jan-30-07  Paul123: I would have to say that Ulf Andersson and Wolfgang Uhlmann Zoltan Ribli are some of my favorite all time GM.

I study there games as much as possible

Feb-17-07  Chess Carnival: Here is a great positional game won by Andersson: Ulf Andersson vs Y Gruenfeld, 1982

In the final position he's a pawn down but with a winning position..

May-17-07  jmrulez2004: Andersson's endgames are so beautifully crafted.....if there is anyone we should learn the engame from its mr ulf here
Jun-22-07  erebdraug: <bob000: If Ulf still undefeated in correspondance chess?> Nope, he lost this game against Hans Marcus Elwert in the NBC Millenium email Tournament (2000). Here's the game.

Only time Ulf Andersson lost in correspondence chess !

Jul-10-07  wolfmaster: Ulf has played Zoltan 29 times and guess who's won more games? Nobody!!! All their games have been draws. Is this a record, chessgames.com?
Jul-31-07  Marvol: Well, he's done it again. After drawing all his games in the Bazna Kings Tournament (Bazna Kings Tournament (2007)/Ulf Andersson) he has increased his vicelike grip on Eastern Europe by also drawing all his games in the Banja Luka tournament (Banja Luka (2007)/Ulf Andersson).
Jul-31-07  AlexandraThess: Congratulations for Mr. Andersson on his remarkable achievement. He has played 23 games so far this year and he hasn't lost yet. This is one significant achievement considering his age. He should be proud of it!!
Jul-31-07  DutchKnight: Is Andersson an endgame genius or what?
Aug-01-07  vonKrolock: I met him in the late seventies, he was in South America with a troupe that included Viktor aka the Terrible and Ljubo the squeezzer - I'll say - an iceberg - pieces until the third - if he played one to the fourth - You could resign, like the Titanic
Aug-01-07  AlexandraThess: AlexandraThess: I saw him once on the European Individual Chess Championship 2004 held in Antalya, Turkey. Unfortunately I was not able to take an autograph from him :(
Aug-01-07  RookFile: DutchKnight: yes.
Aug-01-07  vonKrolock: Well, not at all fair with Ulf - this was kind of a joke :) - Reminiscent from witnessing him playing games like F Braga vs Ulf Andersson, 1979 - ops, his adversary here was Cicero Braga, not Fernando
