Dec-19-09 | | jerseybob: Fred Lennox: Just played over Lanzani-Smyslov, and while it's a fine game by black, white's premature e5 takes it out of Maroczy Bind territory, at least for me. When I think of the Bind, I think of white pawns on e4/c4, and black maneuvering behind the lines, looking for pawn breaks. The Hedgehog can grow out of that. |
Apr-06-10 | | wordfunph: GM Florin Gheorghiu....the guy who beat Bobby Fischer during the Havana Olympiad, Happy Birthday GM Gheorghiu!!! |
Apr-06-10
 | | chrisowen: Never one to guild the lily Florin does angle for interesting signs with nifty play. Grapple the pawn power his curency and trademark with skilled hands. Mock him not, fun or otherwise nor treat with contempt. It was this game <wordfunph> refers against Fischer that really stood out. Gheorghiu vs Fischer, 1966 |
Apr-08-10
 | | Domdaniel: Lily the Pink invented something, but not orthoepy. To gild is to cover in gold. Pink is a popstar, a colour worn by Barbara Cartland, a flesh wound. A guild is a medieval trade union, skilled hands their trademark. It adds up. |
Apr-08-10
 | | Domdaniel: Apart from Gheorghiu, I like the Gothic Florins of the 1870s. Speaking numismatically. |
Nov-29-10 | | I play the Fred: William Winter, re: Gheorghiu at Lugano, 1990:
<Gheorghiu still has a total aversion to sitting down; he has the air of a Mediterranean barber who has decided there must be more to life than haircuts.> |
Mar-12-11
 | | perfidious: For all the references to Gheorghiu's win against Fischer, he-to nobody's surprise, I'm sure-proposed a draw during that game, though already in a clearly better position after Fischer's weak opening play. <Fred> I assume you meant Edward Winter, as William Winter has long since died. |
Apr-20-11 | | technical draw: I wonder if they called him "Mr. Nine Times" in Rumania? |
Feb-16-12 | | waustad: In the 70s I ran into Walter Tevis in a local watering hole and wound up playing blitz with him in his garage until dawn. On the walls he had 2 huge pictures of himself with celebs. I recognized Florin Gheorghiu immediately but needed to be told who David Bowie was. Pop culture clues still trip me up doing crosswords. Oh well. |
Feb-16-12 | | brankat: <waustad> <..but needed to be told who David Bowie was. Pop culture clues still trip me up doing crosswords.> With me it's the other way around :-) Occasionally. So, out of ignorance and curiosity: Who is Walter Tevis? Thank You. |
Feb-16-12 | | waustad: He wrote "The Hustler", "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (the reason for the Bowie picture), "Queen's Gambit", ... At that time he was a professor at Ohio University and I was a grad school dropout. |
Feb-16-12 | | waustad: Speaking of the Romanian Championship, that's what got me to this page in the first place. It is on right now and I hadn't heard of anybody playing. Nisi was at Aeroflot instead. |
Feb-16-12 | | brankat: Thank You <waustad>. In regards to the Romanian championship: <It is on right now and I hadn't heard of anybody playing.> If it is on, then somebody must be playing :-) |
Apr-06-12 | | wordfunph: GM Florin Gheorghiu won the Philippine (Manila) Open in 1970 with 11/11, beating Bobby Fischer's record of 10.5/11 a year earlier. happy birthday, GM Gheorghiu! |
Dec-12-12 | | waustad: He's been active recently. Maybe someday they'll choose him as an "Old Hand" to play the Snowdrops. |
Apr-06-13 | | virginmind: He placed 14th at the Lausanne Young Masters Open in sept. 2008.

Apr-06-13 | | waustad: One more year as a sexigenarian! |
Jul-26-13 | | galdur: Great player. Bobby´s loss to him at Havana in 1966 was the only competitive game he ever lost to a player younger than himself. |
Jul-26-13
 | | perfidious: Great player? Not really: he obviously was unsure of himself in some way or other, despite his undoubted strength. For those who have doubts, see the kibitzing at Gheorghiu vs L Piasetski, 1977. |
Jul-26-13 | | galdur: Relax <perfidious> I didn´t say he was a great human being. He played some great chess though, there´s no denying that. |
Jul-26-13 | | nescio: <...unsure of himself,,,> Gheorghiu had the talent to reach the candidates matches but his nerves couldn't cope with the tensions of high-level play. See for example the story by <ToTheDeath> under Larsen vs Gheorghiu, 1970 |
Jul-26-13 | | galdur: So, he´s still a sort of a non-person? Which would explain his meager biography here. It sure is difficult to conform in a perfect world where even Ray Keene denounces you. Amen and qmen. |
Jul-26-13
 | | perfidious: <nescio>: Never heard that story till now; maybe it was a small down payment on Gheorghiu's karmic debt. |
May-24-17
 | | keypusher: Now that is a profile pic to die for.
<Also, he won the Philipines (Manila) Open in 1970 with 11/11, beating Bobby's record of 10.5/11 an year earlier.> Fischer played in the Manila Open in 1969? Really? Guess no one saved the game scores? |
May-24-17
 | | tamar: Yeah, quite a picture. I didn't know Rudolph Valentino played chess. |
