Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-27-13  jerseybob: Where there's life, there's hope! In Saidy's case here after 35 moves, very little hope. All black has to do to cap off a masterpiece is play 35..cd OR 36..cd, and white would be finished. But Gheorghiu twice misses his chance, and white's Miracle Pawn slips through with 39.d7!
Dec-19-20  Granny O Doul: This game is explained in Lombardy and Daniels' "Chess Panorama". At some point around move 33 or 34, with both sides in great time pressure, Gheorghiu, in moving, sent flying a number of pieces from the lower right corner of the board. In setting them up again, on his own time, he forgot to restore White's pawn to g3. Saidy, either by accident or with a canny eye on the main chance (the latter, according to the book) allowed the pawn to remain off the board UNTIL Black's 38...Qxe3 (check, not check!), whereupon he restored the pawn himself and pushed 39. d7!, winning.
Apr-10-21  Granny O Doul: Looking through an old Chess Life, I see in March 1988 a discussion about the ethics of telling/not telling your opponent if he forgets to hit his clock (prompted by a K-K world championship game). "Everybody should do what's right (Saidy said)--even Gheorghiu".

OhioChessFan: <Granny> no way that's right. If the g Pawn was off the board, the h4 Bishop could capture on f2 on his 36th and 37th move.
Apr-10-21  Granny O Doul: @OCF--...but had Saidy done that, Gheorghiu would have been forced to remember the White pawn on g3. Playing 38. Kh3 gave Gheorghiu the chance to lose on the square. Of course, 38...cxd6 is still winning for Black.

perfidious: Gheorghiu and ethics in the same sentence is rather like mooting journalism and ethics as similar concepts.
