ANDRE LILIENTHAL
(born May-05-1911, died May-08-2010, 99 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Hungary)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Andre Arnoldovich Lilienthal was born in Moscow to Hungarian parents. He was taken to Hungary at the age of two, but emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1935.

Awarded the GM title in 1950 he won the Moscow Championship 1939-40 and became (jointly with Igor Bondarevsky) USSR Champion in 1940 [rusbase-1] ahead of Vasily Smyslov, Paul Keres, Isaac Boleslavsky and Mikhail Botvinnik. He retired in 1976, returned to Hungary and remained well liked and respected.

He had the distinction of having met or played every World Chess Champion (with the exception of Steinitz) and was the world's oldest living grandmaster for quite some time.

alexmagnus: <Who might be the next <oldest living grandmaster?>> Averbakh (born 8.02.1922) is.
May-08-10  laskereshevsky: For the sake of Averbach's own life his birthday is enough far away from nowadays
May-08-10  wordfunph: Andre just celebrated his birthday few days back and i'm sad to see him gone..

may he rest in peace..

time to meet all chess greats in heaven GM Andre Lilienthal..

May-08-10  wordfunph: <laskereshevsky: HI, where U got this (very sad) new?!>

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

May-08-10  Andrijadj: One of the greatest ages of chess, time of Nimzowitsch,Capablanca,Alekhine,Lasker,Botvinnik- ,Reti,Tartakower...Lilienthal,is now over.

May He Rest in Peace!

May-08-10  capanegra: He was the last bastion of the old guard.

This is an article from Slobodan Adzic about Lilienthal written in 2005: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

<Can you imagine someone saying to you: "I have beaten Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine". Actually saying it, in the fifth year of the 21st century? It is hard to believe, but Grandmaster Andor Lilienthal, who on May 5th celebrated his 94 birthday, actually beat the second, third and fourth world champions. He has also beaten numbers six and seven, Botvinnik and Smyslov, as well as players like Tartakower, Najdorf, Bronstein and Taimanov.>

Mr. Adzic mentions that Lilienthal defeated Alekine, but that game doesn't appear in the database. Does someone know anything about it?

He also doesn't mention Lilienthal defeating Euwe (champion number five) which in fact happened (though Lilienthal was lucky): Euwe vs Lilienthal, 1937

Rest in Peace GM Lilienthal.

May-08-10  Landman: RIP Lilienthal.

One of his earliest opponents (Mieses) was born 1885. Anyone know of an older opponent?

chancho: <Landman> Jacques Mieses was born in 1865. Emanuel Lasker (another opponent Lilienthal played) was born in 1868...
May-08-10  lost in space: RIP Lilienthal!
May-08-10  JonathanJ: RIP, André, I'll always remember your famous win against Capablanca
May-08-10  laskereshevsky: In January the issue about the Alekhine mentioned defeat by Lilienthal's hands was already pointed by me in this page:...

<Jan-05-10 laskereshevsky:

<Sep-11-09 WhiteRook48: and beat Lasker, Capablanca, and Alekhine>

In true, there are no evidences of the victory over Alekhine in a serious game. Would I like it very much cause ANDOR is one of my chess heroes, but till nowadays, unfortunatly, no one was able to find the scoreshit of that fantomatic game...>

May-08-10  pamparana: RIP GM Andre Lilienthal.

Eric Schiller: a tremendous player whose impact was never fully appreciated by the chess world.
May-08-10  SamAtoms1980: Did he really meet every World Champion except for Steinitz, Tal, Fischer, and Kasparov?

That includes Lasker and Karpov -- an outstanding span

R.I.P. Andor

May-08-10  Chessdreamer: He did not play Karpov! In the games Karpov vs Lilienthal, 1966, Karpov vs Lilienthal, 1967 Karpov's opponent's name was V. Lilein.
May-08-10  capanegra: <laskereshevsky> Thanks, next time I'll check previous pages before asking. :)
May-08-10  virginmind: RIP gm lilienthal
May-08-10  laskereshevsky: <capanegra> U'R Welcome.

<Chessdreamer> I think U deserve an applause from the CG's chess community to have noticed out the mistake in the games-database

May-08-10  malthrope: I posted this in my Profile earlier today...

In memorium -- I will be flying my <CG.com> flag at half-staff today as a Chess legend has passed away Grandmaster Andre Lilienthal (May 5, 1911 - May 7, 2010). He was at the time of his passing the world's oldest Grandmaster at 99 years young. :) Later today I will post a fitting tribute to him with rare pictures and unique links to websites celebrating his life that I've collected over the many years... My sincere thanks to <ppeti84> who posted this report earlier today:

<He passed away yesterday...

<<"Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." >>

R.I.P. Andor!>

He was a giant in the World of Chess. :)

Like many of us here my first introduction to him (at the tender age of 16 - 46 years ago) was this famous Chess game played at Hastings Chess tournament in 1935.

Lilienthal vs Capablanca

The final position after 26. Rxe4+ 1-0

It's rare to catch Capa napping like that and it must have appeared to him (20. exf6!!) as a <"Bolt from the Blue!"> What a masterpiece! ;)

Today ChessBase published this report in memorium:

<Grandmaster Andor Lilienthal dies at 99 (08.05.2010)>

ChessBase was kind enough to include two other special postings (which I'd saved at the time) covering the legend...

<Andor Lilienthal has beaten them all (26.10.2003)>

Just scroll to the bottom to find "Special Reports" as it's featured after the news item on the 'World Rapid Chess Championship Cap d'Agde' (Oct 24-30, 2003) concludes.

<He beat Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine – and old age (30.05.2005)>

Finally, I'd saved this special Anniversary report published in "64" Chess Review / Magazine (contributed by Vladimir Anzikeev) which includes in his own words his encounters with Dr. Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine and Botvinnik, including, "How I learnt to play chess." :) Also featured is a lovely picture celebrating his 95th birthday with GM's Kramnik and Gelfand, included of course is Andor's lovely wife Olga.

<The Last of the Chess Mohicans>

The caption for the last picture posted in today's ChessBase memorium I found most befitting...

<"To the end – always animated when talking about chess">

We should all be so lucky! :D

Only a few loose ends to tie-up and that is to get a fine picture published here on his player's page and for <CG.com> to honor him with "Game of the Day" and "Player of the Day." :^)

Sincerely, - Mal

PS: Thanks to everyone who posted and contributed here today. :) Note: I also re-posted the ChessBase links already given by <wordfunph> and <capanegra> just for the sake of completeness.
