offramp: <ughaibu: Hey, Offramp! How about uploading the extra games?>

You can shake your fist and call me names
But I will not upload Burns's games.

Sep-15-17  ughaibu: .

I must say chief, you cause me grief.
And if chief's a name,
I'll bear the shame,
and take the blame,
but if it's all the same
with you, what you can do,
is turn the screw
on a grandkid or two
and they'll do it for you!

Dec-15-17  thegoodanarchist: OMG, I just learned a YUGE!!! Learning!

Here it is:

EVERY...SINGLE....HIPSTER... in existence today....

is modeling himself after AMOS BURN!!!

The well-styled beard. The Lenon spectacles. The Ralphie hair style.

IT... IS... ALL... THERE...!!!!!!

Dec-15-17  thegoodanarchist: Ralphie from the Simpsons, if you don't know already...
Dec-31-17  Sularus: happy birthday!

MissScarlett: Was he some sort of radical or non-conformist? Has anyone seen a photo of him wearing a tie?
Feb-09-18  TheFocus: <MissScarlett: Was he some sort of radical or non-conformist? Has anyone seen a photo of him wearing a tie?>

He wore tie-dyed shirts before they became fashionable.*

* (This statement is unproven and probably false as well.)

Feb-09-18  zanzibar: Huh?

Feb-09-18  zanzibar: This is a good illustration to tie on(*) with the other one:

MissScarlett: This man shamed Britain attending important international tournaments without a tie:

http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/...

We can only be grateful that the imperious Blackburne was present to redress the balance.

Feb-09-18  zanzibar: There's one in every crowd:

http://www.creating-purpose.co.uk/c...

Though perhaps Burn started a new fashion trend?

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gwSEDVM2L...

Or should that be, maintained a tradition the others abandoned?

Another rumor, started just now by me, was that Amos also didn't wear socks.

Feb-09-18  zborris8: <Amos also didn't wear socks> Yes, I read that somewhere.

offramp: I am at the moment watching a film called <Terror in the Wax Museum>.

It is set in Victorian London, even though it has an all-American cast (apart from Elsa Lanchester, she's from Manchester).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terro...

The great Broderick Crawford is in it. He plays a guy named Amos Burn s.

And there is weird, deformed sidekick called <Karkov>. I bet he has the first name Anatoly, if he was ever given a first name.

It's a not very horrific horror film with lots of stars and it is camper than RuPaul's Mazda Bongo.

Aug-10-18  Howard: Amos didn't wear socks? I wonder if that doorstop-sized book on him (which I have) mentions that.

Charles Nelson Reilly, incidentally, also didn't wear them from what I've heard.

Aug-10-18  JimNorCal: Can a chain of chess player names be made such that the initials follow the alphabet?

AB Amos Burn
CD Chakk Deepan
EF Ernst Falkbeer

I foresee difficulties ...

MissScarlett: West London Observer, November 27th 1925, p.9:

<Mr. Amos Burn, 76, the well-known chess master, died suddenly at his flat at Brook Green, Hammersmith, on Wednesday morning. The previous evening he entertained a friend to supper and a discussion of chess problems. After the meal the two men were chatting together when Mr. Burn put his hand to his head and said, "What a pain I have got here." Rising from his chair, he staggered and would have fallen into the fire had not his friend been quick enough to save him. A doctor, resident in the same block of flats, was immediately called, and found that Mr. Burn was suffering from a stroke. His friend remained with him during the night, but Mr. Burn's condition was hopeless, and he passed away at 2 p.m.>

Aug-10-18  Paint My Dragon: <died ... on Wednesday morning ... at 2 p.m.>

Shouldn't that be 2 a.m.?

MissScarlett: I had noted the discrepancy (naturally, the mistake was not mine), but was unsure where the error lay. Perhaps <2 p.m. [sic]> was in order.

QR
Rabeea Qasim Mohammed Al-Qazzaz as "Qasim Rabeea". Oherwise this might be an insurmountable hurdle.
