 | | Sneaky: Your opponent has a misplaced piece but its not immediately trappable. How to punish him? Very subtle problem. I like it, because this is exactly the kind of problem you have to solve when you really play chess. Not many games allow you to sacrifice your queen or perform some stunning bridge-burning attack, but situations like these happen all the time. The problem with playing g5 first, I think, is 29.g5 hxg5 30.hxg5 Ne4 31.b4 Rc3, the move that's not possible when you play b4 straight away. |
Nov-18-06 | | The Backward Pawn: It's funny I looked at both 29.b4 and 29.g5 but I didn't think to put them both together. |
Nov-18-06 | | ahmadov: This must be the most boring puzzle I have seen on this web site :( |
Nov-18-06 | | Fisheremon: <RandomVisitor: 31...Rxe3 was perhaps better: (17-ply) 1.10 31. ... Rxe3 32.fxe3 Ne4 33.g6 fxg6 34.fxg6 a5 35.bxa5 Rxa5 36.Rc1+ Kd6 37.Rb3 b5 38.Rb2> Better 36. a4 b6 37. Kg2 Rc5 38. Kf3 Kd6 39. Rd4 Ke5 40. Rh1 Ke6 41. Rh5 Nd6 42. Kf4 Nc8 43. Rh8 Nd6 44. Rb4 Nc4 45. Rb5 Rc6 46. Rb8 and White must win. |
Nov-18-06 | | bakuazer: Nice puzzle, I actually think. 29.b4 was crying loudly, but i thought for about 5 minutes to find 30.g5; the moment i noticed it my instinct told me that is it. 32.Nxd5 was in my mind from earlier thinking. the rest is easy (i thought up to move 35. after which i think black is finished) good puzzle, in my opinion. |
Nov-18-06 | | ReikiMaster: <melianis> removing Rc5 with 29.b4 has the benefit of creating threats against black King with 32.Nxd5. This prevents 32...Nxg5 as black must lose a tempo to create an escape route for his King. |
Nov-18-06 | | Fisheremon: <melianis: Should have seen the objective of white - displacement of two pieces and the fork Nc7, instead, ended up with nothing on kingside. Can't see why 29.g5 doesn't work. Is it ...Rc2?> Nope, it works too. Let me produce an interesting variation: 29...hxg5 30. b4 Rxe3 31. Rxe3 Rc2 32. b5+ Kxb5 33. hxg5 Ng4 34. Rb1+ Kc6 35. g6 fxg6 36. Re6+ Kc7 37. Rxg6 Nxf2 38. Rxg7+ Kd6 39. Rg2 Nh3+ 40. Kh2 Nf2 41. Rb4 Rxa2 42. f6 Ke6 43. f7 Kxf7 44. Rf4+ Ke6 45. Rfxf2 with Rook vs. three pawns. |
Nov-18-06 | | sharpnova: does 29. g5 work just as well? |
Nov-18-06 | | HelaNubo: After 29. b4 Rb5 30. g5 hxg5 31. hxg5 Ne4 White's play can be improved by 32. Rc1+! Kd6 (32... Kb6 33. a4 Rxb4 34. Nxd5+ forking King and Rook) 33. a4 Rxb4 34. Nxd5 Rxa4 35. Nf6+! Ke5 36. Nxe8 and wins. |
Nov-18-06 | | eblunt: <sharpova> no because after the Knight eventiually comes to e4, either 31 b4 Rc3 , or 31 Nx5 Nxg5 You need to force the R to b5 before chasing the N to e4, as Sneaky pointed out |
Nov-18-06 | | TheBB: Is today the official Keres bashing day? He lost both the puzzle and the game of the day... poor guy... |
Nov-18-06 | | thegoodanarchist: <TheBB>
Yeah, and he is still dead, too! Triple whammy... |

Nov-18-06 | | zb2cr: I tried 29. g5 instead of 29. b4. Thanks to <Sneaky> for pointing out the fallacy of the move. |
Nov-18-06 | | Fisheremon: <zb2cr: I tried 29. g5 instead of 29. b4. Thanks to <Sneaky> for pointing out the fallacy of the move.> Pls see my message. |
Nov-18-06 | | kevin86: It looks like black has a mighty fortress-instead one little pawn move makes it look like a lace curtain. I wonder if Keres was a Michigan fan---so today will be REALLY bad for him. lol |

 | | playground player: No, no, a great master like Keres would never be undone by a lot of petty pawn-pushing... would he? Trouble is, these puzzles have conditioned me to look for flashy Queen or Rook sacrifices before I look for anything else. It's nice to find that kind of move in real life; but it's more likely you'll have to grind it out on the ground, with pawns. |
Nov-18-06 | | Sasquatch777: I got the first move? Does this mean I got today's puzzle? |
Nov-18-06 | | Stellar King: I GOT TODAY'S PUZZLE!!! This is awesome! I saw that the pawn was inadequetly defended. (read my four rules for a combination in the The Kibitzer's Café) I then thought about removing the defender and viola!! I GOT IT this is the only Saturday puzzle i have got!! (my goal: to solve all (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's) the puzzles in the week without getting any wrong. |
Nov-18-06 | | lvlaple: Sorry, Stellar King. I think most of us moved g5 with the intention of winning the d pawn. Unfortunately, you have to win the rook. |
Nov-18-06 | | Amulet: <Sasquatch777: I got the first move? Does this mean I got today's puzzle?>
No. But, it means you are worthy of consideration. |
Nov-18-06 | | moppa: I thought the ugly-looking 29. a4 threatening 30. g4 but the text is a bit more forcing |
Nov-18-06 | | zb2cr: <Fisheremon>,
In your line, why is 30. ... Rxe3 forced? Frankly, I don't see why it's forced. Just what's wrong with 30. ... Rb5? After that move I don't see anything better for White than 31. hxg5, transposing to the actual game. My point is that there is absolutely no crushing threat to cause Black to give up the exchange. Please enlighten me. What am I missing? |

Well, as noted in RandVisitor's mess (& mine too) White's knight is quite dangerous for Black in the center. Let say 30...Rb5 31. hxg5 Ne4 32. Rc1+ either 32...Kb6 or Kd6, 33. a4 with next Nxd5 and Black's position is lost. |
