Jun-29-06 | | percyblakeney: Tiviakov gains almost 20 points from the Dutch Championship. Timman had a disastrous tournament and will lose more than 30. |
Jun-30-06 | | hitman84: What a performance by Tiviakov!
+8 in such a strong tourney. |
Jun-30-06 | | acirce: If I recall correctly, Tiviakov wrote in a NIC Yearbook survey - #76 I think - that 2.c3 against the Sicilian is what gives White the best chances for an advantage. Although I find it hard to believe, it's not contradicted by his 4.0/5 in this tournament: Tiviakov vs Stellwagen, 2006
Tiviakov vs J Bosch, 2006
Tiviakov vs Van der Wiel, 2006
Tiviakov vs J Smeets, 2006
Tiviakov vs Timman, 2006 |

 | | lostemperor: As a special prize, Sergei Tiviakov, as the new Dutch champion, may drive a cadillac http://www.cadillac.com/index.jsp?n... one month free! There is only one problem. He has no driving licence. |

 | | lostemperor: <dakgootje: Aye, just because we dutchies cant play chess doesnt mean you have to mention it> quite the opposite. In fact we Dutchies may still be the best of the west if we look at amount of international GM to the head of the population A question: how many IGM does the Dutch have now?
a) 14
b) 15
c) 16
d) more |
Jul-02-06 | | dakgootje: Probably more as i think we've got a lot of GM's on average per inhabitant of the country. It was more that the 2 best players are not native dutch, but 'only' citizen |
Jul-02-06
 | | lostemperor: Yes but don't forget that native Loek van Wely was the Dutch champion several times before Tiviakov, who never made it higher than 2nd place. The netherlands have a rich culture of chess (thanks to Max Euwe) and one of the highest amount of GM as a % of the total population, native or non-native. Only countries like Iceland, some former Soviet republics like Armenia and some former Yugoslav states may have a bigger % of GMs. There are 16 million people in the Netherlands. Suppose there are 16 GM. That means one GM for every million people. Take for instance the US. It should have 300 GMs to equal that Dutch "%". The difficult Sunday puzzle question remains how many GMs are Dutch now. The one who has the closest number wins ;). |
Jul-02-06 | | Xaurus: <lostemperor>Norway has 4,5 million inhabitants and 8 gms, this is almost 2 gms per 1 million inhabitants. Denmark has 5 million inhabitans and the same amout of gms, Sweden has 9 million inhabitants and 15 gms. Not bad either... |
Jul-02-06 | | dakgootje: Dont we have 20 GM's (only male GM counting)? think relatively the most grandmasters/inhabitants live in economic very good countries with a low ammount of inhabitants ps: 1700th post ;-) |
Jul-02-06
 | | lostemperor: <Xaurus> well Norway Denmark and Sweden beats the Netherlands then! Scandinavian countries are doing well as can be expected. Also I don't think the Swedes should make stupid jokes about your countrymen anymore since you guys beat them in the GMs race :). <dakgootje> congratulations with your 1700 posts. I suppose you may have read it somewhere but I don't count the deceased GMs like Euwe, Donner and Prins. So should I count you in for a guess of 20 GMs?! |
Jul-02-06 | | acirce: A search at http://www.fide.com/ratings/advseek... for Netherlands GM's gives 22 results. Unfortunately it also lists WGM's for some reason (I don't know how to filter those away because if you search for men only women who are GM's and not only WGM's will be overlooked). But removing the two women who are only WGM's (Sziva and Van Der Mije) from the list gives 20 GM's, 17 active. |
Jul-02-06 | | Xaurus: <Also I don't think the Swedes should make stupid jokes about your countrymen anymore since you guys beat them in the GMs race :).>Haha, trust me, there's even more jokes heading the opposite direction. :-) |
Jul-02-06 | | percyblakeney: Iceland with a population below 300 000 and 10 GM's isn't too bad. |
Jul-02-06 | | percyblakeney: China and India, both with more than 1 000 000 000 inhabitiants, have less than 20 GM's each. |
Jul-02-06
 | | lostemperor: <acirce> correct 20! But you've cheated hehehe. I didn't know there was that Fide database. Save me some time to write all those names it took me a few hours to come up with. <percyblakeney> China and India are relative new countries in chess (and promising). Yes I already said Iceland may be the country with biggest % of GMs. And they even forgot Fischer! |
Jul-02-06 | | percyblakeney: <Yes I already said Iceland may be the country with biggest % of GMs> I see now, missed that... In Japan people of course do other things than play chess, but it must still be the biggest country with no GM's (and one single IM). |
Jul-02-06 | | acirce: Nigeria seems to have no GM's, and it seems slightly more populous than Japan. |
Jul-02-06
 | | Joshka: Amazing Japan, with no gm's gives the only one they had in custody, to Iceland with the largest percentage;-) |
Jul-02-06 | | percyblakeney: Yugoslavia was a great chess country, as the ex-Yugoslav countries, almost 100 GM's in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Macedonia. But strangely enough few top players. Nikolic with 2626 has the highest rating, and Beliavsky and Damljanovic are the only other to reach the top 100. As Nikolic they are both 45 years or older. |
Jul-02-06 | | percyblakeney: <Nigeria seems to have no GM's, and it seems slightly more populous than Japan> Yep, Nigeria wins that one. In South Korea the highest rated player is 2454, number two is 2041. |
Jul-02-06 | | Xaurus: That is an interesting curiousity, a country such as Japan doesn't have any GM's... |
Jul-03-06
 | | al wazir: <acirce: Tiviakov wrote . . . that 2.c3 against the Sicilian is what gives White the best chances for an advantage. Although I find it hard to believe, it's not contradicted by his 4.0/5 in this tournament> I find it hard to believe that Tiviakov won because of his opening, rather than superior tactics. Timman was the only opponent in the games you cite within 100 points of his ranking. |
Jul-03-06 | | hitman84: Sicillian Alapin is Rybka's main opening.
Playing against alapin with Rybka,I have realised how strong this opening really is! |
Jul-03-06 | | hitman84: Or should I say "The turk" book has Alapin as its main weapon against Sicillian. Rybka handles this opening better than any other engine as its main strength is positional play. |
Oct-24-06 | | bakedalaska: I am surprised that Tiviakov was not invited to Essent after his strong showing in the Dutch championship. |
