Jan-14-07  Bobak Zahmat: Wow, this guy may be as suprising as two years ago. I really didn't think he able to beat a strong GM as Sargissian. Only time well tell whether this was just a coincidence or not.
Apr-13-08  Piti: well done, Jan!
Apr-13-08  brankat: Congratulations Jan!

Jan Smeets has been a fairly well known young GM in last 3-4 years. A strong potential. So I wonder why is there no Bio here?

Aug-19-08  achieve: Very good result for Smeets at the Staunton Memorial -- strong finish!

Well done, Jan!

Dec-04-08  Alphastar: he plays in group A of corus 2009.
Jan-17-09  piatos blue: Congratulations!!! You beat Ivanchuk.
Jan-23-09  Billy Vaughan: And he's still keeping his head above water with 3.5/6, tied for second and performing nicely above expected.
Mar-16-09  volvak: Jan Smeets is only 23 but he's already suffering from hair loss.
Apr-05-09  wordfunph: <volvak> ahehe! you're right!

Happy Birthday GM Jan Smeets!

Apr-05-09  WhiteRook48: Happy Birthday GM Smeets!
Jun-06-09  Edwin M: I'll be playing a clock simul against GM Smeets the 27th of june in Amsterdam at the yearly MEC festival. I'll post the game on my blog.
Jun-26-09  Edwin M: -edit- There's been a change. Instead i'll be taking on GM Jan Werle.

Troller: I hope Jan can keep his spirits high despite his poor play in Corus. Last year he scored a respectable 6/13, losing two and winning one. He had some very decent results since that in 2009, notably qualifying for Amber by having the best score on the "Rising Stars" team. But he also played top board for the Netherlands in the Euro Team Championships, finishing with an even score against opponents rated 2653 on average. His 6/10 in the Staunton Scheveningen was equally convincing. He certainly looked like one who could hold his own against the best, but something has gone completely wrong for him in Corus 2010. Especially his round 5 loss against Kramnik was pitiful, going as White into an inferior endgame right out of the opening, then spending practically all his time before move 25...

Well, cheer up Jan! And start playing decent chess again.

Jan-29-10  Whitehat1963: Seems to be out of his league at Corus this year.
Jan-31-10  Paraconti: This guy is NO GM. Can't even find easy winning combinations. His reputation in chess is destroyed after his last game agst Short in Corus.
Jan-31-10  Mr. Bojangles: <His reputation in chess is destroyed after his last game agst Short in Corus?

lol

Apr-05-10  wordfunph: Jam Smeets was born in Leiden, Netherlands on April 5th, 1985, the same day as fellow Dutch GM Erwin L'Ami. i tried to search their head-to-head battle but to my dismay...nada, i wish to see them face each other over the board.

birthday happy GM Smeets!

lostemperor: So from his bio his major feat is only that he is born the same day as l'Ami. Pretty meager ..

Troller: Smeets more or less retired some years ago, but apparently he has decided to earn a few bucks in the Bundesliga this season. Happy birthday!
Jul-18-21  Nosnibor: If you like smeets you can have an archive of your own to keep your designs safe guarded.
