After being taught chess by his father when he was five years old, Jan Werle finished 3rd in the European Under-16 Championship in 2000 and 2nd in the U-18 division in 2001. In 2006 he earned the Grandmaster title in Wijk aan Zee and won the Essent Open. Winner of the European Union Championship (2008).
