This was the 3rd official European Junior Championship. Nine rounds in 10 days, starting on Wednesday 26 December. Rest day 1 January. Participants were the top 10 finishers of the European Junior Championship Preliminary (1973) tournament. Makarichev won on tiebreak score (½ a point more in the Preliminary) ahead of Pinter, both with 7/9.

There was also a Final-B tournament (consisting of nos 11-20 from the Preliminary), won by Slavoljub Marjanovic, a Final-C, won by Roland Ott, and a Final-D, won by Stephen Swanson.

  perfidious: Could be that the age cutoff was before Urzica's 21st birthday, which was late in 1973.
