Sergey Yuryevich Makarichev was born in Moscow. He was awarded the IM title in 1974 and the GM title 1976. European Junior Champion in 1973-74 he also jointly won the Moscow Championship in 1976 and 1983. Other results include 2nd= at Amsterdam 1975, 1st= at Novi Sad 1983, 2nd= at Oslo 1984 and 1st at Frunze 1985.
