PAUL MORPHY
(born Jun-22-1837, died Jul-10-1884, 47 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Paul Charles Morphy was born in New Orleans. He was the son of a successful lawyer and judge Alonzo Morphy. His uncle, Ernest Morphy, claims that no one formally taught Morphy how to play chess, but rather that he learned the rules by observing games between himself and Alonzo. When Morphy was only 12 years old, Johann Jacob Loewenthal visited New Orleans and at the behest of his father, agreed to play a casual match with the prodigy. Young Paul won 2½ to ½.

In 1857, Morphy won the 1st American Chess Congress, New York (1857) with a dominating performance. This success prompted a European trip where he met and triumphed over most of the prominent masters of the period, namely Adolf Anderssen whom he defeated +7 -2 =2 (see Anderssen - Morphy (1858)), Loewenthal in Morphy - Loewenthal (1858) and Daniel Harrwitz in Morphy - Harrwitz (1858). The tour was overshadowed, however, by his failure to secure a match with Howard Staunton. Returning to America to public acclaim, the chess world awaited his next move, but his interest in chess was fading and he returned to New Orleans to start a legal career. Attempts by Louis Paulsen and Ignatz von Kolisch to arrange matches were rebuffed and all subequent rumours of a public return came to nothing. Morphy still played occasionally in private, especially with his friend Charles Maurian.

Although the official title of World Champion did not exist in his time, Morphy was and is widely regarded as the strongest player of his day. Even today his games are studied for their principles of open lines and quick development, and his influence on the modern game is undeniable. Mikhail Botvinnik wrote of his influence: "His mastery of open positions was so vast that little new has been learned about such positions after him."

FSR: <TheFocus> True enough. I've been meaning to write an article on the effect of James Mortimer on Morphy numbers. It's huge. Mortimer reportedly played hundreds of games with Morphy in the 1860s. ChessGames.com's database shows him playing as late as 1907, including J Mortimer vs Tartakower, 1907 and O Bernstein vs J Mortimer, 1907. He played in a few tournaments after that, playing some British and French players who went on to have long careers, such as George Alan Thomas. Need I say more?

  FSR: <keypusher: ... I am a four, but via simuls, which I suppose shouldn't count.>

Simuls count, blitz games count, everything counts. I'm a four, through either Barden (a blitz game) or Bisguier (two simul games).

I guess he was the Morphy Number equivalent of OctoMom

keypusher: <FSR> Good! In any case, I misspoke. I played a four (Kasparov), which makes me a five.

sleepyirv: Today, let us remember why he was called the pride of chess.
Jun-22-11  DrKurtPhart: Happy birthday to Paul
brilliant lil creole bird
Jun-22-11  drnooo: Perhaps Mr. New Orleans should not be called the pride of chess but the Terror. Nobody in the history of the game ever had the little world of the 64 squares so terrorized: only HE issued a challenge to ANYONE willing to play him that he would beat them

beautiful

when the game was still in the hands of the fastest draw with real bullets no ersatz organization intervening. There is a moment in a truly bad western Tombstone which has a great line go ahead throw down you sonofabitch pull that smokewagon..... Well Morphy said the same even letting them draw first pawn and move fellas give you that now come and get me sort of it was the same with Koufax it didnt do any good to steal Rosebouros signs they even knew what was coming curve or fastball he only had two pitches and it never did them a whit of good

same age as Carlsen or Fischer or Kasparov I suspect you give ole Paul about a month on the computers, just a month considering his eidetic memory and he could beat any of em and if not a month, then a year tops

Jun-22-11  WhiteRook48: brilliant player, far ahead of his time. I was introduced to chess with a Morphy game
Jun-24-11  kingfu: Hey Focus,

After you get done with The Fischer Monster book (when?) , I have a suggestion:

Write a book comparing and contrasting Bobby Fischer and Paul Morphy.

I think there would be many more comparisons and less contrasts.

Jun-24-11  kingfu: I just noticed the first comparison.

Even though the picture of Morphy is a drawing, he has THE STARE.

Anybody ever see The Fischer Monster with THE STARE?

Anybody?

Jun-24-11  TheFocus: <kingfu> <Hey Focus,

After you get done with The Fischer Monster book (when?) , I have a suggestion:>

At least another 12-18 months. I received some great advice from NM Eliot Hearst (he made some nice contributions), who told me to "find a place to stop, and then STOP. If not, you will research forever."

When <parisattack> visits this summer, I am going to allow him to look at it and then maybe he will come in here and say, either: "A great book is coming!" or "Man, that book is a load of crap. Back to the drawing board, <Focus>." (I bet I know what he will say, though. Then maybe the naysayers will be quiet.)

<Write a book comparing and contrasting Bobby Fischer and Paul Morphy.

I think that would be an excellent idea.

I intend to do an objective review - and then proceed to lock <TheFocus> in his study until it is completed!

What I have seen so far is 1) Stunning research of top-flight quality and 2) A theme that will set it apart from and above all other Fischer tomes.

In 45 years of chess literature collecting I have done some research of my own and have seen the research of others. You can take my word or not - this man's work is at the top of the scale. As I have admitted many times, I do not have a world-class collection. But I do know the space and have at least some perspective on same.

Jun-24-11  TheFocus: Thank you, my friend.
Jun-24-11  kingfu: Focus,

Yes, I agree. We must do all we can to avoid premature publication!

Take your time. We need everything you can give us regarding Robert James Fischer. The HBO thing was fun.

However, it gave us no new facts or insight into The Fischer Monster. I want to know EXACTLY what made him go.

Give it to me now. Give it to me, baby. I want it Siclian Style. No, stop. Please, stop. Give me The Spanish Torture.

Fischer Versus Morphy can be Volumn Two.

Jun-26-11  bartonlaos: New Paul Morphy Game

Or maybe just a partial game against Jules Arnous De Riviere in 1863. I'm posting it here that someone will translate the descriptive notation into a pgn, as I'm having trouble - I get to move 40 and the whole thing falls apart.

Hopefully someone with better skills can piece together the missing moves to make the mate work. Maybe it's an odds game - or maybe it's just me, but anyway, here's the game: http://www.freeimagehosting.net/ima...

Jun-26-11  BobCrisp: This is the game in question: Morphy vs De Riviere, 1863
Jun-26-11  bartonlaos: Appreciated <BobCrisp>. I misread 34.P-KKt4 for 34.P-Kt4 to translate 34.b4 instead of 34.g4 --- and an (m) I thought was Mate on move 46, is actually a footnote.
Jul-01-11  chesstyro: whats the answer to the chessgames morphy tee shirt? thank you
Jul-01-11  TheFocus: Mate in two. See if that helps.
Jul-09-11  Antiochus: "I am not, nor want to be one
professional chess player."
