 | | MissScarlett: Respect to the guy; he's been lunching out on boring stories of glory days for forty long years. |
|
Dec-19-16 | | TheFocus: I wonder why Kavalek says that Matulovic defeated Fischer in a match? He didn't. Euwe was the only player to defeat Fischer in a match. |
|
Jun-22-17
 | | plang: He has not written a column for the Huffington Post in over 4 months - is he OK? |
|
Aug-09-17 | | Ironmanth: Happy birthday, Grandmaster Lubosh. Have appreciated your columns for many years. |

 | | plang: His last column was 2/9 - hope he is Ok |

 | | Fusilli: If someone shot a movie about him, the actor who played Toby in the West Wing (whatever his name was) should play Kavalek. |
|
Feb-25-19 | | Caissanist: I remember Kavalek referring to a game which he won through a double-rook sacrifice, after which "there then followed the hopeless struggle of his two rooks and three pawns versus my bishop and eight pawns". Does anyone know which game that would be? It sounds quite interesting. |
|
Feb-25-19 | | Retireborn: <Caissanist> That's this game:- Gufeld vs Kavalek, 1962 |
|
Feb-25-19 | | Caissanist: Thanks! Should have looked in notable games first. |

 | | Fusilli: What is he up to these days? Completely retired? |
|
Jan-19-21 | | Granny O Doul: I'd heard rumors yesterday and the only obits I see so far are in Czech. Nonetheless: https://sport.aktualne.cz/ostatni-s... |
|
Jan-19-21 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: It is confirmed, that the former Czech-American world-class player Lubomir Kavalek died yesterday in Reston, Virginia, USA. To honor him, we shall all play his marvellous and famous game E. Gufeld vs. L. Kavalek, Marienbad / Marianske Lazne 1962, Ruy Lopez, Cordel defense tonight, maybe his greatest achievement on the 64 squares. RIP, GM Lubomir Kavalek! |
|
Jan-19-21 | | Eastfrisian: RIP. He was one of the great chessmasters. |

 | | FSR: Sad to hear of his death. A nice man and a great player - more so than most people realize. Somewhere I have a letter he wrote me (in response to mine) just after smashing Ulf Andersson 6.5-3.5 in Andersson - Kavalek (1978). Oddly, his three wins in that match were the only games he ever won against Andersson. Their lifetime score was +6 =17 -3 in Andersson's favor. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... |
|
Jan-19-21 | | Messiah: Rest in peace, GM Kavalek - you will remain a legend and an often referenced player, theoretician and writer/columnist for a long, long, long, long time. You worked a lot for it, and you fully deserve our sincere admirations, forever. |
|
Jan-19-21 | | Diademas: Sad news indeed.
His obituary at chess.com https://www.chess.com/news/view/lub...RIP. |

Jan-19-21
 | | MissScarlett: He once discussed a chess position with Fischer in a hotel lift in Reykjavik. In later retellings, he became Fischer's main second and confidant. |

 | | Williebob: RIP, Maestro. Your column in The Washington Post was my introduction to the beautiful universe of chess. Every Monday morning I took my baby daughter for a nice long stroll to the corner store and purchased the morning paper - perfect happiness, guaranteed. You will be remembered for as long as the game is loved! |

 | | Williebob: GM Kavalek seemed to have a winning sense of humor in addition to being a world class player. I liked this anecdote from Stuart Rachels' excellent book, The Best I Saw in Chess. Stuart writes of his experience at the 1990 Manila Interzonal, during the Player's Meeting.
<The meeting was held in a small room... >
Over 60 famous-to-legendary players were packed in attendance -
Manila Interzonal (1990)
. <Campomanes [who was running the meeting] raised the question of who should sit on an appeals committee to deal with unusual disputes. No player should, however... 'We have Grandmaster Kavalek, whom everybody respects. I'll begin by nominating him.'But Ljubojevic rose and spoke with obvious discomfort. 'Of course we all respect Kavalek,' he said. 'But he is Short's second, and a dispute could affect Short's standing - even indirectly, because of tiebreaks. I am sorry, but I must oppose this.' Kavalek then rose from his chair. 'Me too,' he said, and sat back down. In a flash, so much laughter pervaded the room, bouncing off walls and grandmaster bodies, it seemed as though the air had caught fire.> |

 | | saffuna: One of the most interesting chess articles I have read was Kavalek's account of Short's opening preparation for the WC match with Kasparov in 1993. A lot of detail, very revealing. The second part of the article dealt in the acrimonious split with Short during the match, and Kavalek's version is disputed. But the earlier recounting of the preparation is great. |

 | | MissScarlett: <Nigel Short
@nigelshortchess
Saddened to learn of the death of my former trainer, the Czechoslovakian & US Champion, Lubosh Kavalek. What he lacked in originality, he compensated for in assembling material and organising work (a particular weakness of mine) - and for that I am eternally grateful.

Replying to
@SKRHardwick
In the sense of not producing a single original opening idea in the three years that he worked for me (1990-1993).

 | | plang: That is a really mean-spirited comment by Short - doesn't reflect well on him at all. |

 | | Honza Cervenka: This is very sad news. I met him a few times, once over the board in a simul organized by Czech chess journal Sach-info in the gardens of Prague Castle. He was always polite and very communicative guy with great sense of humor. RIP, Grandmaster. Kavalek vs J Cervenka, 1995 |
