May-14-10  dunkenchess: <The website of United States Chess Federation (USCF) will post: Sorry - no matches were found for Eric Schiller.>

Now I know why ES is mad at Campo. Even USCF disown ES.

chancho: <dunkenchess> He's in the USCF rating lists. Type Eric A Schiller.
May-14-10  dunkenchess: <chancho: <dunkenchess> He's in the USCF rating lists. Type Eric A Schiller.>

You must be joking. His name won't appear in the rating list, always sorry.

But there are plenty of players from the Philippines in the USCF Ratings List.

chancho: <dunkenchess> Either you are not searching it right, or you're pulling my leg. Either way, I don't care. Whatever issues you have with Eric Schiller that also is no concern of mine.
May-14-10  wordfunph: ohh ohh...here we go again!
May-14-10  kurtrichards: small things....
May-14-10  TheFocus: Small mind. I am referring to you <dunkenchess>.

It is nice to see how Eric just ignores your jibes.

May-15-10  laskereshevsky: Im enough old to remember when A lot of people called him "KARPOVMANES"... Of course he was an important FIDE president... maybe not loved by everybody, but with an outstanding importance in the chess-history....

AND.... even if for sensitivity reasons, I dont like to blame passed away persons, in the TRYING to resume and to give a sense to a lot of things wrote here on CG about him in this last days, I want to qoute the words of a great (american) writer:

<An Epitaph is an inscription on a tomb showing that virtues acquired by death have a retroactive effect.>

Ambrose Bierce

R.I.P. FLORENCIO.....

Sep-30-10  BobCrisp: <A soon to be released book claims Campomanes was a KGB agent: "The KGB plays chess" (Boris Gulko, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Popow and Juri Felschtinski): "FIDE President Campomanes, who was already a KGB agent, was persuaded with the help of numerous promises and presents to prevent Karpov's defeat at any expense. At the same time [USSR Chess Federation President, Vitaly] Sevastianov turned to Campomanes. With the signature of [deputy chairman of the KGB] Bobkov a proposal was finally sent to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to terminate the match and start again with a 0-0 score. The intention was to avoid the impression that the decision favoured Karpov. But mainly people did not want to displease Kasparov's powerful patron Gaidar Alijev. The Central Committee supported the proposal of the KGB and Campomanes terminated the match.">

Eric Schiller: There is no need to respond to such foolishness. I am a USCF Life Master and owner of several state titles. I'm no Grandmaster but have participated in USCF events for over 4 decades and will be playing this weekend. I'm still in hospital but they let me out to teach and play.
Sep-30-10  TheFocus: <Eric> Good luck this weekend. I remember seeing you play in Hawaii (Waikiki). Boris Gulko, Joel Benjamin, Eduard Gufeld and I believe Gufeld's wife was there.

I wasn't playing. Just brought some books to get autographed.

Oct-01-10  BobCrisp: <Eric>, were you ever approached by the <KGB> to be an agent?

Eric Schiller: I have been accused of working for KGB and CIA but if I did I would have made more money. I remained a free agent, though I did cooperate with FBI when they investigated the World Youth Teams I organized in Chicago. Despite their spying on me for subscribing to Soviet newspapers to get the chess news.

HeMateMe: Do you know Carol Jarecki? She was a representative in this recent FIDE vote.
Oct-15-10  wordfunph: IM Jack Peters in his chess column for the Los Angeles Times called Florencio Campomanes, correctly, "the most effective FIDE President in history."

(Source: Chess Life Magazine September 2010)

Oct-16-10  Petrosianic: In what way? I'd probably give that not to Alexander Rueb before Campomanes. He built the organization and filled a vacant world title.
Oct-25-10  wordfunph: According to Randy Hough, in 1986 he played chauffeur to FIDE President Florencio Campomanes when the latter arrived at JFK Airport. When the little Datsun did not start due to dead battery, the FIDE President ended up the menial role of pushing the car. The battery charged, and Campo trotted up and got back in the car. Hough said that Campo seemed familiar with the procedure and displayed no visible pique in pushing the car.

Oct-26-10  bubuli55: i wonder why they did not switch places. is Randy Hough older? but then, ganyan nga ang pagkakakilala ko kay Pocamps.
Nov-05-10  wordfunph: Story by <Iskubadayb> on FIDE President Florencio Campomanes:

"I had a ride with Pocamps. It was somewhere in Quezon City. His car just went dead in the middle of the street. He handed me a woman's high heel shoe! What the heck am I going to do with this thing, was my very thought. He said, "Iskuba, give the battery a good whack!" I gave the battery terminals a couple of nice smack. Amazingly, it worked! I went back inside his car trying to hide the darn shoe because I didn't want to look silly holding a woman's high heel shoe in the middle of the street."

Nov-05-10  bubuli55: this is hilarious. cracks me up everytime i read it. :)
Nov-17-10  bharatiy: This is an interview by FIDE president which appears in NYT blog. ITs two part this is part 1 http://gambit.blogs.nytimes.com/201...
