ERIC HANSEN
(born May-24-1992, 32 years old) United States of America (federation/nationality Canada)

[what is this?]

Grandmaster Hansen won the 2012 Canadian open with 7½/9 and tied for share of 5th-10th with 9/13 at the World Junior Championship (2012) in Greece that same year. He tied for 1st-2nd in the 2008 Alberta Closed (1) and the 2011 Canadian Closed (losing to Bator Sambuev in a 2 game rapid tie-break at the latter event). His second place in the latter tournament (which was also the Zonal 2.2 championship) qualified him to play in the World Cup (2011), where he lost to Azeri super-GM Vugar Gashimov in the 1st round. Coached by Miodrag Perunovic, he made the list of top 100 juniors in the the world (at 73rd place) and top 8 Canadians in August of 2012. Before the 2015 Canadian youth chess championship started in Windsor, he, Aman Hambleton, Lefong Hua, and Romain Edouard provided lessons at a summer chess camp (2, 10) for juniors between June 29th and July 3rd.

He became the highest rated Canadian player on the FIDE lists in May of 2013. Born in the United States, he has dual USA and Canadian citizenship and studied at the University of Texas (3). He scored 8½/9 in the 2012 Panama open and at the Reykjavik Open (2014) (finishing (11) with 8/10), his tie for 2nd-5th saw his FIDE rating approach a new high of around 2600. He tied with fellow Canadian Hambleton for share of 3rd-7th in the Chess Festival Ortisei with 6½/9 (behind Sergey Volkov and Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu who finished with 7/9) (6) and they drew each other in the final 9th round of the 2013 Canadian open. Eric and Aman visited Valencia after his August World Cup (2013) visit so that they could play in a few European club league tournaments. Eric lost to Vladimir Malakhov in the first round of the World Cup, exiting the event. He finished with 6.5/9 at the 2015 Canadian zonal (12) and finished ahead of fellow Canadian coach Nikolay Noritsyn with 7½/11 at the Durban 2014 open in South Africa (8).

Teams

His Chess Olympiad (2012) debut on board 4 saw him score 6 wins and 3 draws after sitting out for only 1 of 11 rounds (2). His score of 7½/10, together with an earlier Grandmaster norm registered in Europe in the summer of 2012, confirmed his grandmaster title (4). He participated on the Canadian team of the Chess Olympiad (2014) (+3-2=4 on 2nd board) and the Chess Olympiad (2016) (+8-0=2 on 4th board).

He was a member of the Guildford 1 team that won the 4NCL in the 2013-14 season.

He joined Fabiano Caruana, Alexandre Lesiege, Michael Kleinman, Aman Hambleton, Lefong Hua, Elias Oussedik and Robin van Kampen on the Montreal Chessbrahs(14) team in 2016.

Jul-15-13  gauer: <twinlark> thanks for adding those other presidential nominees - wasn't sure that more than 1 were appointed at the time. Also, the 2011 Canadian zonal should've be amended as May, not August. Discussion at World Cup (2013) is up now, where further discussion is more appropriate than at Eric's corner.
Jul-22-13  Orlack: Congratulations to GM Eric Hansen!!! He finished joint first with GM Nigel Short at the 2013 Canadian Open on 7.5/9, ahead of GM Ivan Sokolov and GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista among others! (Short was declared the champion on tiebreak).
Feb-08-14  dumbgai: Hansen had a very good tournament in Gibraltar, scoring 7/10 with no losses for a 2679 TPR. He beat Agdestein and held draws against Tomashevsky, Li Chao, Rapport, Harikrishna, and Edouard. Well done!

Penguincw: Congrats to Eric Hansen for his performance at the Reykjavik Open (2015)! Hansen entered as the 16th seed at 2566, but finished 8th overall (in the middle of a 11-way tie for 3rd). He scored 7.5/10.

He started off with 2 wins, but then followed up with 2 draws. However, he then won 3 games in a row to climb right back in there. He then had to face top seed Mamedyarov, and drew him. Then he had to face 3rd seed Eljanov with black, and held him to a draw (Hansen was better throughout most of the game too!). Then a draw against Naroditsky in the last round secured his strong performance.

Like mentioned before, he was rated 2566, but had a TPR of 2665. He also gained a solid 13.8 rating points, as he continues his quest to 2600.

Go Canada!

Penguincw: Happy 23rd birthday to Canadian GM, Eric Hansen!

He's currently participating at the American Continental Championship, and was doing awesome up to R8, where he was in a 3-way tie for 1st with 6.5/8, but then lost to Jorge Cori. Now in the last round, he has black against Granda Zuniga.

I'll give more details later.

Go Canada!

Penguincw: And congrats to Eric Hansen for his performance there. He started off 2/2 (like 17 others) before conceding a draw, then another win, 2 more draws, then 2 more wins. Entering R9, he was in a 3-way tie for 1st, and faced Jorge Cori with black, and lost. He rebounded with a win, but then lost to 1st seed Granda Zuniga with black to finish with 7.5/11 (11th place, 12th on tiebreaks).

He was rated 2580, and had a TPR of 2573, but gained 2.8 points, so his performance was what was expected of him. He was the 11th seed.

The Chess Olympiad (our version of the Olympics) starts September 2. I'll be going offline for a couple of weeks as I have my first training camp in 16 months (!!). Commentating, coaching, and streaming is nice but it's really time for me to return to professional chess. All the info about the Olympiad is below.>

Bareev seems to have all but quit competitive chess, and he is no longer listed as 'active' on the FIDE rating list. The last time he played in a FIDE-rated tournament was in October 2016, almost two years ago:
