Oct-01-09 | | TheFocus: Botvinnik quote: "Before Geller, we did not understand the King's Indian." |
Oct-01-09 | | ughaibu: By my quick calculation, I make his record 69%: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |
Oct-02-09 | | parisattack: I am looking forward to seeing the Chess Secrets book with Geller. There was a website dedicated to him I saw once some years back. Can't find it now, anyone know of it? Done by a Danish or Sandinavian fellow if memory serves. |
Oct-04-09 | | parisattack: I received my copy of Chess Secrets: The Giants of Power Play. Neil McDonald did a great job on the Giants of Strategy tome and appears to have done a good job here, also. The players considered: Topalov, Geller, Bronstein, Alekhine and Morphy. I am not sure on Bronstein as a Power Player - and I would have switched Alekhine to the Attacking volume and Stein to this one. I've only read the first chapter, Dynamic Elements which is something of an introduction. Some interesting topics follow - Catching the King in the Center, the Goldielocks Queen and A Battering Ram on the f-file. For the Geller fan starved for annotated games, there are 18 here. There are so many chess books coming out from the Brit publishers these past few years. I used to try and buy all of them but gave up - too many in quantity and too few of quality. But The Giants of Power Play is a keeper, IMHO. |
Nov-03-09 | | BlueMooner: I thoroughly agree with Paris. McDonald's annotation collections are consistently entertaining and his latest offering 'Chess Secrets: The Giants of Power Play' is no exception. Geller's games are great fun & I have been impressed with his aggressive but principled repertoire - some good and exciting ideas. |
Nov-10-09 | | TheFocus: Does anyone know of this book Geller mentions, and was it translated into English? The following is from an interview with Efim Geller in the bulletins from the Fischer - Spassky 19992 match, as recorded in No Regrets by Yasser Seirawan - "I am writing a book which will include a selection of annotated games to honor Fischer’s 50th birthday. I have already signed a contract with a Russian publisher, but the number will be limited – only 2000. A lot of copies are meant as gifts. I will pay special attention to the games I played against Bobby. Fischer was young when we played and every game was a pleasure." |

Nov-10-09 | | TheFocus: <returnoftheking> Thank you. It would of course have to be after 1992. |
Nov-10-09 | | returnoftheking: yes;
Kak pobeždatʹ čempionov is the only book that might be it, the rest I just wrote down for completeness; these are all books by Geller known to our national library. |
Nov-10-09 | | returnoftheking: Apart from several opening monographs that is. |
Nov-10-09 | | TheFocus: <returnoftheking> Again, thank you. |

 | | James Demery: Interesting quote of the day by Geller. My question is why didn`t more GM`s get Fischer in those positions? |
Dec-05-09 | | Red October: < James Demery: Interesting quote of the day by Geller. My question is why didn`t more GM`s get Fischer in those positions?> well it was easier said than done, and since the quote, Fischer also improved to a point where any OTB weaknesses were not ascertainable, especially in a match where even if Fischer blundered he could come back stronger and go ahead as he did in the match against Spassky |
Dec-05-09 | | nescio: <Red October: James Demery: Interesting quote of the day by Geller. My question is why didn`t more GM`s get Fischer in those positions?> <well it was easier said than done [...]> But they did. Before 1970 the champions of the unclear positions, Spasski, Talj, Kortchnoi, had positive scores against Fischer as well as Geller. |
Dec-05-09 | | Red October: yes but its fair to say that before 1970 those elite were stronger overall than Fischer, but he was of course improving fast, my point was IMHO this was not a permanent flaw in Fischer's play that he did not improve on |
Dec-05-09 | | nescio: <Red October> I agree, but it doesn't make Geller's quote less true, nor does it answer <James Demery>'s question completely. Fischer always preferred clear, simple positions with large dynamic undercurrents over unclear positions with many tactical possibilities and his opponents of course made use of this, even if Fischer learned to play the latter well enough in his later years. |
Dec-05-09 | | Red October: yes, of course.. my post was not in anyway to indicate that what Geller said was not accurate nor that the elite did not get Fischer into those positions and succeed :) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <NEW CHESS <<<history>>> VIDEO>!!!!! "THE SICILIAN VESPERS" starring User: crawfb5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVJ_...
Chess is a unique game due to its rich history- whenever any of us plays, we follow in the footsteps of past Masters. This is the story of Larry Crawford, a strong player who recently "played in to" a very famous, and interesting, incident in Chess History: the "Sicilian Vespers" episode between the Russians and the Argentines at the Goteborg Interzonal in 1955. The story continued a few years later in 1958 when a 15 year old Bobby Fischer stunned Gligoric by reviving the "Sicilian Vespers" line at the Potoroz Interzonal in 1958. I urge all chessplayers to examine their games against a good database to see which famous episodes of Chess History YOU might be participating in!! Here is the PGN file of Crawford's game:

May-17-10 | | MaxxLange: I have never heard the "Vespers" name. I have heard it called the "Gothenburg Variation"....wow, thanks for the link For the uninitiated: in the 1955 Interzonal, the Argentine players prepared a sharp Sicilian Najdorf novelty, with ...h6 and ...g5, and they played it in for the first time, against top Soviet players, on 3 boards at once |
