Honza Cervenka: ....but he overlooked that after 18...Rxe5 black Queen is protected. By the way after 18...Qxe2 19.Rg1+ Kf8 I don't see any mate. Of course, white has perpetual check after 20.Bh6+ Ke7 21.Nxc6+ Ke6 22.d5+ Kf7 23.Rg7+ Kf8 24.Rg6+ etc.
Jul-21-03  ughaibu: Yes, you're right. How thoroughly bizarre.
Jul-21-03  KrokoKorchnoi: Geller was a young man back then, prone to firy attacks, especiially against weaker ones, such as Novotelnov, whom he apparently underestimated

Honza Cervenka: <Geller was a young man back then, prone to firy attacks, especiially against weaker ones, such as Novotelnov> Well, Novotelnov, who was champion of Russia in 1947 was hardly then seen as weak player by Geller. Geller simply miscalculated his combo. That happens time to time to every player.
