If you really are "not making this up!!!", then why did Kasparov do that? Was it a protest at having to play a GM in a simul?

Feb-22-08  Youjoin: He´s not a GM yet. He has to achieve his third GM norm. He won the Group B of the Iberoamericano Tournament yesterday in Morelia. Here are the results: http://www.ajedrezmorelialinares.co...

Dec-12-08  Augalv: "This country was made for football. We can't expect more (support) than what we already have"

Diego Flores, in an interview almost three months ago when asked about how much support chess is having in Argentina.

http://www.sunchaleshoy.com.ar/arch...

Unfortunately, the only thing almost everybody cares about in Argentina is football. That's why chess' popularity is so low here.

(Video interview is in Spanish)

Dec-12-08  Jim Bartle: Argentina seems pretty crazy about tennis as well, if the reaction to its Davis Cup loss is any indication.

Then again, the supremacy of football was highlighted a couple of years ago when Nalbandian tried to reschedule a Wimbledon match so he could watch Argentina in the World Cup.

Dec-12-08  Augalv: Well, you are right Jim. After so many great Argentine results, tennis' popularity in Argentina has grown a lot. And to think that there was a time during the 90s when the best rated Argentine player in the ATP rankings (Hernán Gumy), wasn't even among the to 100.

<the supremacy of football was highlighted a couple of years ago when Nalbandian tried to reschedule a Wimbledon match so he could watch Argentina in the World Cup.>

He did? lol, I didn't know that.

Apr-12-18  diagonal: A year ago now, Diego Flores won also the closed International <Magistral Memorial Jorge Szmetan> which was held from 16-27th April 2017 at the Nestor Kirchner Cultural Centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Ivan Morovic Fernandez (CHI), 6.= Axel Bachmann (PAR), as well as veteran Herman C. van Riemsdijk (BRA), or Argentine-Italian GM Carlos Garcia Palermo, still the only Argentine player to have beat a reigning world champion under classic time controls.
