Anna Vitalyevna Zatonskih was born in Mariupol, Ukraine. She learned chess at age 5 and won girls' championships of Ukraine in several different age categories before finally winning the "overall" women's championship in 2001 and 2002. She became a WGM (Woman Grandmaster) in 1999 and obtained the International Master title in 2003. She represented the USA 2010 (Women's) Olympiad team on 2nd board & was part of the American team that won the silver medal in the Calvia Olympiad (Women) (2004).

Zatonskih won the US Women's Championship in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and most recently US Championship (Women) (2011). She currently lives with her husband, GM Daniel Fridman, in Ohio. She qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012) winning her first round match with 4-times Argentinian Women's Champion, IM Carolina Lujan before losing to WGM Wenjun Ju in the second round.

Apr-28-11  SetNoEscapeOn: Congrats to Anna on winning her fourth US women's championship. They really made her work for it this time.
Apr-28-11  James Bowman: <Congrats to Anna on winning her fourth US women's championship. They really made her work for it this time.>

She started way off form, I still thought if she made it to the semi finals that she would be the favorite and she didn't disappoint. In some ways this was her finest U.S. championship because she showed the dogged determination to press ahead when it looked all but over.

Sorry for Irina she I'm sure is devastated for losing a won game.

And Tatyana Abramov should be overjoyed for going the distance.

Jul-17-11  Sho: Happy birthday Anna,

I teach middle school and try to inspire kids towards chess. I think the girls can find some in you. Thanks.

Jul-17-12  brankat: Happy Birthday Anna!
Feb-10-13  Wyatt Gwyon: Daniel did really well for a...large man.
May-04-13  waustad: Her husband is from Latvia but plays for Germany. She's from Ukraine but plays for the USA and plays in the championships often. She also plays for Baden Baden in the Frauenbundesliga and may be the only German resident to play for them this year. The German language WIKI http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Z... claims that she moved to Long Island in 2005. I wonder how many nationalities their daughter claims and what languages are spoken at home. Her parents would have Russian and German in common and probably English.
Apr-03-14  waustad: In the penultimate round of the FBL, I see two different results for her game against Lilit Mkrtchian. In the live broadcast of the games: http://live.sf-deizisau.de/?g=2&r=10 it is listed as a draw, but on another website it is called a win for black: http://nsv-online.de/ligen/fbl/?spi...

Penguincw: Happy Birthday to U.S. Women Champ and WGM/IM Anna Zatonskih.
Dec-14-14  waustad: It appears that she got a "win" today for OSG Baden Baden in the Frauenbundesliga since both Foisor's were not present for SF Deizisau, though they wee listed as playing the top two boards. Baden Baden ended up with a 5-1 win and leads SK Schwäbisch Hall by 1.5 game points in tiebreak. They play each other on January 24. With so many players busy in tournaments in China, Poland and England, a lot of lower boards got some work today. http://nsv-online.de/ligen/fbl-1415...
Mar-28-15  waustad: She played first board today for OSG Baden Baden and drew with WGM Marta Michna. Playing a weekend in Germany, where she lives, is less of a strain than her usual trip back to the US. Her team won 4-2 with wins on the bottom two boards. Many members of FBL teams were involved in the knock out tournament in Sochi, the Aeroflot tournament, the Polish Championship or the US Championship, so a fair number of lower boards played today. Baden Baden's matchup tomorrow is with SK Lehrte so we may see even lower boards playing since the latter team is one of the weakest in the league, elo wise.
Mar-28-15  waustad: There was a comment earlier by <HeMateMe> that Anna Z played for Russia in a team event. According to olimpbase, she has played for Ukraine and the USA in international team championships. Playing for a Russian or other club team has nothing to do with nationality, unless there is a local rule about how many local players must be on the team. She has played in German and Chinese leagues for example. She could play for a Russian team like UGRA in the European Club Cup without representing Russia.
Mar-29-15  waustad: Today OSG Baden Baden won all 6 games against SK Lehrte. In this round they used their bottom 3 ranked players, so that 5 of the 6 players were all German residents, which might silence some of the criticism from German bloggers. For anyone interested, games from earlier are available here: http://chess-international.de/ticke...
Mar-29-15  schnarre: ...Thanks waustad
Apr-18-15  waustad: Today she drew her game as first board for OSG Baden Baden. The team won their match 4.5-1.5 and clinched first place in this season's German Frauenbundesliga. Many of the top players from several teams were missing due to the Women's Team Championships taking place in China. Since both of the teams that were closest to Baden Baden scored 3-3 ties today, Baden Baden's 20 match points is enough to clinch, despite not having Either Muzychuk sister, Viktoria Cmilyte or Eva Moser playing today.

Jul-17-15  thegoodanarchist: Darn, I just remembered yesterday was my brother's birthday and I forgot it.
Sep-28-15  waustad: It seems that chessbase has an incorrect result for one of her first games in the new FBL season. According to several other sources, including the results in the same article, she won her game against Marta Michna, but in the game score, it is listed as a loss: http://de.chessbase.com/post/auftak...
