ANDRE LILIENTHAL
(born May-05-1911, died May-08-2010, 99 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Hungary)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Andre Arnoldovich Lilienthal was born in Moscow to Hungarian parents. He was taken to Hungary at the age of two, but emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1935.

Awarded the GM title in 1950 he won the Moscow Championship 1939-40 and became (jointly with Igor Bondarevsky) USSR Champion in 1940 [rusbase-1] ahead of Vasily Smyslov, Paul Keres, Isaac Boleslavsky and Mikhail Botvinnik. He retired in 1976, returned to Hungary and remained well liked and respected.

He had the distinction of having met or played every World Chess Champion (with the exception of Steinitz) and was the world's oldest living grandmaster for quite some time.

May-05-06  technical draw: Wow. 95. The world's oldest grandmaster. Happy Birthday!
May-05-06  Calli: They should record a game between Lilienthal and a 6 year old. If the 6 year old lives to a 100, he can tell everybody in the year 2100, "Yeah, I played a guy who played Capablanca and Alekhine."
May-05-06  euripides: <Calli> In terms of publicity, to those that have, more shall be given .... one Hungarian chessplaying family does rather spring to mind....
May-05-06  diagonal: Many warm congratulations to Andre Lilienthal. Dear chessgames, can you honour this living legend by adding a picture at the top of the page? Thanks much!
May-06-06  CapablancaFan: Overall record: Jose Raul Capablanca tied Andre Lilienthal 1 to 1, with 2 draws. Not bad record for Lilienthal considering who he was playing. To have an even score against Capa is almost an honor.

plang: Lilienthal is very underappreciated. You can learn a lot about positional chess by looking at his games.

The Last of the Chess Mohicans

Today is the 95th Birthday of the legendary chess player, the oldest Grand Master in the world, Andor Lilienthal. He is one of few people who can say that they played chess with Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Lilienthal!

Oct-11-06  Plato: I almost forgot to mention:

As the Last of the Chess Mohicans, Lilienthal has "scalped" an impressive list of World Champions in tournament play:

Lasker
Capablanca
Euwe
Botvinnik
Smyslov

Not too shabby, I'd say!

Oct-11-06  Calli: <Today is the 95th Birthday of the legendary chess player>

He was born on May 5, 1911. At least thats everywhere I looked including Gaige. Did "64" somehow mix up a date format?

Oct-11-06  Plato: <Calli> Hmm ... well, he's made it to 95, so I say we give him two birthdays all the same!
Aug-16-07  vonKrolock: From a game Lilientahl vs Belavenets in the Soviet ch for 1937:

Lilienthal presented Loyd's 'Organ Pipes' in game form... He was in good mood, but not apparently inspired for a fight here, even so he saved a draw in this game

Aug-16-07  whiteshark: <vonKrolock <Loyd's 'Organ Pipes'>>

Aaah, brilliant !!!

The original as presented here: http://www.jlevitt.dircon.co.uk/bea... (4th diagram)

or did you remember the <Thomas Traverner> puzzle one month ago Max Bier

Maybe time is right for a <Loyd's 'Organ Pipes'> game collection ?!!

Aug-17-07  vonKrolock: <whiteshark> Excellent link with text and examples - Of course I remember the Taverner story - the problem won a prize, and Loyd got annoyed that what he considered as his own idea and setting were used in a form he considered not fully adequate (not some decisive improvement in contents) . In the past Loyd himself had developed sometimes schemes already pioneered by others (like with the so called Excelsior) but always with a decisive increment in idea and (or) in form. With the Organ Pipes, it's a scheme that arrived to be showed in various contexts by composers from time to time, but during some decades the 'double frontal Organ Pipes' was considered something impossible to reach in a two-mover - This until Pal Benko came with:

White to play and mate in two #2
When he showed us this one, his comment was: "They said before it was impossible... what they overlooked, was the discovered mate here, look" (taking the e5 pawn with a hand, and the d3 pawn with the other, and directing to e4) It's evident whom with 'THEY' he meant - some theoreticians :)

Open Defence: has he played Anand ? it would be something if his record is still in place .. having played every champ after Steinitz
Feb-01-08  Karpova: Three pictures:

Feb-01-08  technical draw: <Karpova> Thanks for the link. The man knew how to dress!. Maybe he can be the all time Best Dressed Chessmaster....
Feb-02-08  vonKrolock: quote online since midle 2007: <" Andre is in such good health that Fischer recently reneged on his contract to play the Hungarian a match in 2011. He felt the odds would be less favorable than he had anticipated at the time of the signing. ">

Lilienthal learned in his teens, in Budapest, the profession of taylor - there're some amusing stories about this period of his life, only I can not remember if they are currently online... In Portuguese we have a saying <Em casa de ferreiro o espeto é de pau> - maybe translated to 'smith's house, wooden spear (?!)', where 'spear' is a tool used to roast little pieces of meat (kebab!?) - those photos seems to show that the expert taylor also likes to dress well himself...

Feb-02-08  MichAdams: In the top left picture, he looks a bit like Simon Cowell.
Feb-04-08  chessamateur: Does anybody know of a book in which Lilienthal recounts his experiences with the great champions of the past? I'd love to here some stories about some of the greats like Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine. Thanks!
