Sneaky: He was born in the great Armenian Vowel Famine of '58!
Feb-26-04  Dillinger: Lilliputians have shortened names because their little hands get tired from writing.
Feb-26-04  Calchexas: Dillinger: It does look like Lilliputian, doesn't it? I dunno... maybe there isn't a picture of him on this site because he'd be indistinguishable from the queen.

tamar: It all makes sense now. Because of the Armenian Vowel Famine of '58, his family could only afford one less than juicy cmqat per meal for young Smbat.

Honza Cervenka: Some pictures of Lputian are on http://www.chesslive.de/scripts/ser...
Feb-26-04  Dillinger: Sylvester Stallone of the Lilliputians!
Feb-26-04  Calchexas: Trend: 0-0?

A Lilliputian Sylvester Stallone chessplayer with a trend of Kingside Castling? Or does "0-0" just indicate which end he cracks his eggs on?

Feb-27-04  Dillinger: 1. 0-0 is the Gulliver opening. Such blatant cheating will get a man strung up by his ankles every now and then.
Jul-21-04  themindset: i'm looking for the game Lputian-Dlugy, from the 1998 New York Open... does anyone have it? google is proving unhelpful.

Jun-28-05  aw1988: h m gd ths dd hs n vwls, whch mks ths sntnc hv n mnng whtsvr.
Jun-28-05  DP12: Maybe getting a bit old, eh? Lputian-Kasparov is a fantastic game. They may have played more than one but this one was from 78 or so.
Jun-28-05  DP12: Tbilisi 1976
Jul-01-05  ARMENIA: Even though your performance wasn't very pleasing for yourself or your country, we fully support and wish you the best in the future... THe work you do with the youngers in Armenia is much more important than the ELO points that might drop... Your intelegence and talent in the game will live forever: thank you for helping our bright stars rise. You are apperciated and God Bless you...

God Bless Armenia

Oct-10-05  AlexanderMorphy: Can anyone give me a bit more information about this guy? I saw him in todays puzzle vs Morozevich and was wondering who he actually was...
Oct-10-05  Poisonpawns: How is Smbat correctly pronounced?
Dec-11-05  ARMENIA: <Poisonpawns> Smbat Lputyan is one of the greatest Armenian chess players of Armenia! He hand in hand with Rafael Vaganyan have constructed a new life of chess in Armenia for the future generations. The only difficulty with pronouncing his name might be with the letter "A" in Smbat... Just pronounce it like you would Armenia!

His rating has dropped in the past few years because he has spent most of his time teaching young children how to play chess and has been promoting chess worldwide... He is more a great coach then an active player! One of the greatest human beings that still is living! God Bless Armenia

Jan-10-06  Laskerfan82: He is one of the most reliable players in team competitions, too. He's been a huge help to the Armenian team in Olympiads and World Team Championships over the years.

offramp: His first name Smbat is identical in meaning to the more familiar to western ears Sinbad, as in Sinbad the Sailor, like in the famous film 'Neveroyatnite priklyucheniya na Simbad moreplavatelya'.
