MICHAEL BASMAN
(born Mar-16-1946, died Oct-26-2022, 76 years old) United Kingdom

[what is this?]

Michael John Basman was born in St Pancras, London, England. He was awarded the IM title in 1980 and having dual nationality won the Erevan Championship whilst living there in the early 1970s. He was also a pioneer in the production of audio tapes for chess.

Basman was noted for his use of unorthodox flank openings, such as 1.g4, 1.h3, 1.e4 g5, etc. He expanded on the work of Henri Grob with his book on the topic of 1.g4, The Killer Grob.

Basman created the UK Chess Challenge, a tournament for juniors of all standards and ages progressing over four stages.(1)

May-22-10  wordfunph: In Michael Basman's book The Killer Grob, he stated... "...There was a ninety-minute tape containing my eleven games from the British Championship 1982, where I used the Grob in every round."

redlance: He beat John Nunn with the Grob,
maybe John didn't know where he went wrong!!!
Mar-16-11  Willem Wallekers: < FHBradley: I wonder how much better results he would have achieved, if he hadn't played these "unorthodox flank openings". There is little point in being unorthodox, if being unorthodox implies being plainly wrong, someone said.> IMHO he's waisting his talent and eloping his responsibilities.
May-26-11  SvetlanaBabe: I, on behalf of the 'Coffee-house' chessplayers of Australia, thank IM Basman for existing.
Jul-16-11  Shams: Andrew Martin video on Basman:

Oct-04-11  jackpawn: OMG! In honor of today's opening (Borg Defense) I tried it in a couple of games against Little Chess Partner. I won easily! I admit Little Chess Partner isn't the strongest opponent, but I felt very comfortable in the resulting positions. Maybe I should have been playing in Basman's style my whole life?!
Oct-04-11  Harvestman: Just to put in a positive word of thanks to IM Basman for all of his tremendous efforts in supporting junior chess in the UK, and organising the huge Megafinals mentioned above.

I have met him briefly at several of these and he does a brilliant job with the kids.

Nov-08-11  jackpawn: I've been trying the Borg against various computer programs. I'm just amazed how truly playable it is! I've been a conservative in openings my whole life and this is just doing a 180 for me. Becoming a radical in my old age!
Nov-08-11  SimonWebbsTiger: @<jackpawn>

I agree with what Ray Keene said back in Mar-26-07.

The Borg is tricky but not really all that good. I feel Basman feels a little justified though.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 Ng4 7. Bg5 h6 8. Bh4 g5 has been a much tested line at the highest levels in the Sicilian Najdorf (English Attack). It contains some ideas similar to the Borg!

Nov-11-11  jackpawn: Being objective I agree that the Borg simply can't be good, but what I found surprising is how well it works against various White setups.

I haven't tried it yet against humans, but I would imagine it might be good as a surprise weapon against non-Masters.

GrahamClayton: "What is the most likely reason that he [Basman] never became a Grandmaster? He was having too much fun." - Peter Lalic.
Mar-16-13  wordfunph: "If we are to elevate the game of chess to a popular sport, grandmasters must become gladiators, otherwise the game will languish on the periphery, a voice crying in the wilderness, condemned to live and die on a cold arctic shore."

- IM Michael Basman

Mar-16-13  SugarDom: Best quote ever!!

Galing ng research mo tsongki.

Mar-17-13  Abdel Irada: It's highway grobbery, I tell you!
Apr-17-13  Tired Tim: Little known chess facts no 852: "Basman's family knew the singer Cleo Laine, who worked as a babysitter for the young Michael." (impeccable)source - Wikipedia.

Possibly in the same league as "John Dankworth played second board for Hampstead, and Ray Keene was a session museum for The Clash"

Jun-10-13  arthurp: Michael how could you do this! I never saw so many incorrect opening moves played by you in 2009.1.D4?? 1.E4??,1.d4 d5??. Please get back to Basmanian chess! Play in more tournaments!

Mar-25-15  TheFocus: <Chess will always be in the doldrums as a spectator sport while a draw is given equal mathematical value as a decisive result> - Michael Basman.

offramp: Mike, who is now 70, has run into trouble.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...

This begins:
<The world's biggest chess championship faces being wound up after its organiser was bankrupted over a £300,000 tax bill.

The prestigious Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge, which involves more than 1,200 schools and has run for 20 years, is locked in a long-running dispute with the HMRC over VAT levied on its entry fees.

Mike Basman, the competition's founder, was handed an order of bankruptcy at the High Court in London last week, throwing the future of the competition, which staged its "terafinal" last weekend, into doubt.

The 70-year-old, from Surrey, said: "There's no way I can pay this. I'm a chess teacher and my work is to run a tournament, not to collect tax.>

It does not seem to be Basman's fault. I think the English tax people are being a bit faceless and hard-hearted.

MissScarlett: It seems to be very much Basman's fault. 'I'm doing it for the kids' doesn't constitute a legal defence.
Sep-15-16  sfm: "The rest of us were lucky that Basman played those weird openings. When he played something sound he was really dangerous! - Keene (as per my memory)
