FSR: My first standard tournament draw against a GM! I've actually only played around six standard games against GMs, believe it or not. A couple of months ago, I should have drawn GM Zherebukh, but managed to screw it up. I also had a simul game against GM Fedorowicz around 20 years ago where in a bishop ending I put pawns on the same color as my bishop (even though I knew I shouldn't do that), and lost an ending I should have drawn. I was determined not to screw it up this time, and I didn't. I was floating on air after this game.

  Sally Simpson: Good result FSR,

Of course you should have played 4.e2-e4!

In these senior events such moves (which is playable P Garcia Toledo vs A C Rocha, 1969 ) might work.

If not, then you can blame me. (if it did work then The Nimzo-Indian would be defunct, your are playing the move Nf6 and Bb4 is meant to prevent.)

Again, well played.

FSR: Thanks, <Sally Simpson>. Don't think that would have worked against Yermo. He's been around the block a few times (two-time U.S. Champion, three-time World Open champion, two wins against Kasparov, etc.). I'm mystified at Black's agreement to a draw in the game you cite. I'd be happy with the free center pawn.

FSR: Note the weird variation 11...Nc5!? 12.dxc5 Bg4 13.cxd6 Bxf3 14.dxc7 Qxc7 15.gxf3. If he wanted to give me all those pieces for my queen, I would have taken them.

perfidious: <FSR>, I would like the pieces more than the queen myself. (laughs)

WTG!

Congratulations, FSR!!!

Oct-12-22  stone free or die: Just curious, did you record the clock times at the finish?

FSR: <stone free or die> I will have to find the scoresheet, but it was a very uncharacteristic game for me in that respect. I am usually in time pressure, and behind on time, but here I was way ahead on time the whole game. My moves were easy to find, while Yermo spent tons of time trying to find a way to squeeze blood out of a stone.
Oct-14-22  stone free or die: Thanks for the reply, <FSR>.

These little facets of games add a dimension to the play.

I agree with <perfidious>. And apparently Yermo too.

<FSR: My first standard tournament draw against a GM! I've actually only played around six standard games against GMs, believe it or not.>

Congrats! At our level of decent-but-not-great players (and, I assume, people who play a limited number of tournaments per year) it's unusual to be paired with GMs. Twice, I got paired with a GM in the first round of big open tournaments. Other times, the Swiss system means the likelihood diminishes as the tournament progresses.

Jul-02-23  Damenlaeuferbauer: <FSR> Congratulations, Mr. Rhine! A draw in an OTB classical game against GM Alex Yermolinsky is a VERY good result.

FSR: In addition to being my first draw at classical time controls against a GM, this is also my first, and to date only, draw at such time controls against a Senior Master (my opponent was rated 2509). I have beaten three Senior Masters - see F Felecan vs F Rhine, 2019 ; L Kaushansky vs F Rhine, 1997 ; F Rhine vs G DeFotis, 1988 - but oddly had never drawn one.

FSR: <Fusilli> tells me that my accuracy, per chess.com, was 98.4%, while my esteemed opponent had 98.6%. To answer <stone free or die>'s question, the time control was Game/90, with a 30-second increment. I used only 60 minutes, while Yermo used 86.

keypusher: <FSR> I know you're not normally a fan of allowing the Nimzo (Frank Rahde vs F Rhine, 2023 (kibitz #1)) but it definitely made sense for what you were doing here. Congratulations!

FSR: Thanks, <keypusher>. In correspondence games I'm trying to somehow avoid the almost inevitable draw, while here I was very content with a draw in this OTB game against Yermo. I had heard that 4.e3/5.Bd2 was all the rage and figured it would be a solid choice against my GM opponent, even though I knew almost nothing about it.
