Oct-14-04 | | Discoalex: Impressive move. Ne7 would be mate |
Mar-02-05 | | cade: I got this one. Power of the knight. Beautiful. |
Mar-02-05 | | JeffCollier: Does something on the order of 69. ... Rb5 generate any possibilities? (Two for two the past two days, maybe I'm feeling cocky enough to venture an idea in the public arena...) |
Mar-02-05 | | shortsight: this one is easier than yesterday. with so much pieces yesterday, it's hard to see which one Tal favoured. |
Mar-02-05 | | minimaxing: 70. Nd5
Black can't prevent mate via Ne7 and defend his room simultaneously. |
Mar-02-05 | | minimaxing: BTW, that makes two Tal puzzles in a row, but now we are off the supposed deflection theme for the week. |
Mar-02-05 | | Kingsandsquares: Thanks to this week's Tal puzzles, Chessgames.com has really made me discover his games and plaing style. What a Chess player! Tal-Whoever
Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam Checkmate!
1-0 |
Mar-02-05 | | shortsight: <Kingsandsquares> you forgot another shot, Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam-Bam-BAM, normal pistol has 6 shots :) |
Mar-02-05 | | themindset: <kingsandsquares> well, having discovered chess by studying Tal, i can say that this game is definitely not typical of Tal, apart from the final move, this is a very dry game. |
Mar-02-05 | | The beginner: Nice Nd5, and black must trade his rook for a knight. So he is left with a king out of the action zone, down a rook and a pawn, with two unstopable pawns at white's queen side. Seems like a good time to resign |
Mar-02-05 | | drjimmy42: Wow, I actually got this one before the page loaded. Usually the banner at the top is just about rendering before I get a Wednesday puzzle, but this one just came to me as the HTML was flying over the wire. I hope tomorrow's is harder... |
Mar-02-05 | | The beginner: Nm my other post white dont even have to give his knight for the rook. In my previous post i was thinking
70 Nd5..Kg6 71 Ne7+..Kf7 72 Rxc4..Kxe7.
How ever After 70 Kg6 white can simply take the rook there is no need for the Ne7 check. |
Mar-02-05
 | | cu8sfan: Impressive! I was still in deflection mode: If I could give a check with ♘d5 I would win the ♖... (-; |
Mar-02-05 | | themindset: <drjimmy42> beat you! i got it before the first html tag rendered! i actually got it on the first tcp/ip packet! right after the header of the packet boom! i had it! |
Mar-02-05 | | boyhimud: another hu-hom puzzle good move anyway |
Mar-02-05 | | patzer2: Tal's discovered attack 70. Nd5! creates a decisive double attack, threatening both the unprotected Rook and mate (70...Rxa4 71. Ne7#). This move, made possible by the unforced error 69...Rc4??, makes for an amusing solution to today's puzzle. |
Mar-02-05 | | your brilliance: I didn't get yesterday's puzzle (at least not Tal's surgical solution), but I got this one. |
Mar-02-05 | | drjimmy42: <themindset> amazing. I can only hope to achieve that level of eChess zen. Oh wait, If I look down my cable modem cable at just the right angle, I can almost get a sense for tomorrow's puzzle.... almost got it... |
Mar-02-05 | | zb2cr: Easier than usual for a Wednesday puzzle. These
middle-of-the-week puzzles normally take me roughly
2 minutes; I saw the decisive shot in this one
within perhaps 15 seconds. Of course, that puts me
streets behind <drjimmy42> and <themindset>, but I
can at least aspire to their brilliance or perhaps
clairvoyance... |
Mar-02-05 | | beenthere240: <the beginner> If you really want to trade the knight for the rook, black can stop the mate with 70.....Rc7, leading to a loss of the exchange. Not that the game still isn't hopeless for black. |
Mar-02-05 | | zb2cr: <beenthere240>,
Another way of stopping the mate is 70 ... Nf4, giving Black's
King a flight square. Of course, 71 Rxc4, Nxd5+ still
costs Black the exchange, as does 71 Ne7+, Ke6; 72 Rxc4, Kxe7. |
Mar-02-05 | | EyesofBlue: Easy? Hmmm.... not so for me. I totally missed this one. |
Mar-02-05 | | Flyboy216: <boyhimud: another hu-hom puzzle good move anyway> A-ha! Your trick is to switch "o" and "u," making your REAL name <buyhimod>. :) |
Mar-02-05
 | | beatgiant: <JeffCollier: Does something on the order of 69. ... Rb5 generate any possibilities?>
It holds out much longer, but with careful play White should win after 69...Rb5 70. Nd3 followed by the advance of the queenside pawns. For example, if Black tries to blockade the pawns, then 69...Rb5 70. Nd3 Rb3 71. Rb4 Rxb4 72. Nxb4 Nc5 73. Nd5 Nb3 74. Nc7 Na5 75. Kd3 Kf4 76. b4 Nb3 77. Nd5+, etc. and White eventually breaks down the blockade. |
Mar-02-05 | | sidneytorres: Interesting puzzle, as a hobby player, the search involved identifying the possible escape squares for Black King and figuring out which move would both check the king and cover the remaining square: How to check mate. Black has little recourse except to lose the exchange to avoid mate. |
