 | | MissScarlett: <No profane language. "Profane" is defined as language marked by contempt or irreverence for what is sacred.> Profane in this sense means swearing. There's only one flooker on this site who has a special dispenation. <Can we expect future game of the day titles to profane other faiths?> If the <goodanarchist>, as a good Catholic, denies that the Prophet Muhammad was divinely inspired is that, too, profane? |

 | | FSR: <mrknightly> Jesus exists. He does a great job on my lawn. Also Mr. Nogueiras, and many others. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... |

 | | offramp: <"Jesus is not the Messi-ah"> might have been quite a good title for the GOTD. But then <Lachacal> sellotaped on the bit about the French, and then the compulsory mention of Short, and then the whole thing became a bit of a dog's dinner. |
|
Dec-19-22 | | mrknightly: <MissScarlett> “To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it.” G.K. Chesterton <FSR> “Do not be so open-minded that your brains fall out." G.K. Chesterton |

 | | MissScarlett: Think of it more as a trifle - you can't resist sprinkling hundreds and thousands on top even though you've already piled in cream, custard, jelly, sherry, biscuit, mandarin segments, etc. |

Dec-19-22
 | | MissScarlett: <mrknightly> should answer a question asked in good faith: <If the <goodanarchist>, as a good Catholic, denies that the Prophet Muhammad was divinely inspired is that, too, profane?> |
|
Dec-19-22 | | mrknightly: <MissScarlett> Yes. "I like the way you always manage to state the obvious with a sense of real discovery." Gore Vidal |

Dec-19-22
 | | MissScarlett: <mrknightly>, do you deny that the Prophet Muhammad was divinely inspired? |

 | | Stonehenge: I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Please, do not make any jokes about Pasta or I'll be offended. |
|
Dec-19-22 | | mrknightly: <MissScarlett> What I believe or don't believe is irrelevant to the question at hand. If you are asking if such a statement is profane, my answer is, yes, it is profane. |
|
Dec-19-22
 | | MissScarlett: <mrknightly>, are you suggesting that posting guideline #1 is meant to prohibit theological disputation on this site? |
|
Dec-19-22
 | | perfidious: <Stonehenge: I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster....> I, sir, do not; time to blow the whistle!
Hahahahaha! |
|
Dec-19-22 | | mrknightly: I don't think that posting guideline #1 would prohibit such a discussion, but I think it would be highly inappropriate. You appear to be, as we say in the US, moving the goal post, i.e., changing the focus of the discussion. The question at hand is two-fold: 1) Was the statement, "Jesus is not the Messi-ah" profane? 2) if it was profane, was it appropriate to post on cg.com? My response is that, yes, it was profane, and no, as such, it should not have been posted. Since we obviously have a difference of opinion, and you are the gatekeeper and I am not, let's end this discussion, and go about our daily routines. So, adios, and Merry Christmas. |

 | | Sally Simpson: MissScarlett has ruined Christmas.
Yet again another good game has been overwhelmed by a pun discussion. In 1989 (Messi was two years old) Nigel was on the cusp of playing the best chess of his career. Here he uses his King as the fighting piece.  click for larger viewThe White King then leaves the King side, wanders back into the centre to infiltrate on the Queen side. (White to move)  click for larger viewHi FSR;
<chessgames makes jokes about other nonexistent figures too, such as Santa Claus.> The unintentional coincidence is Jesus Nogueiras was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. |

Dec-19-22
 | | MissScarlett: Seems like an opportune moment to make our annual request for Christmas/festive themed puns via Pun Submission Page. Last year's appeal brought in exactly zero, as I remember it. |

Dec-19-22
 | | fredthebear: <Yet again another good game has been overwhelmed by a pun discussion.> The pun is extremely offensive, during the Christmas holiday no less. CGs needs to think twice before making fun of anyone's name. |
|
Dec-19-22 | | Messiah: Good pun! |
|
Dec-19-22 | | nok: It's not a pun. It's two puns put together because you're not sure either is funny. . |
|
Dec-19-22
 | | eternaloptimist: This game is interesting but the pun is terrible. Jesus is the Messiah so the pun is showing an immense lack of reverence for Him. The creator of this pun, <lechacal> is a very foolish person for proclaiming that Jesus isn’t the Messiah. I agree w/ <tga> & <mrknightly> that it’s profane & blasphemous. It’s a shame that some of the kibitzing at today’s GOTD was marred by a profane pun. The pun is profane b/c it shows irreverence & disrespect towards someone who is sacred |
|
Dec-19-22 | | optimal play: I also would like to add my objections to this blasphemous and offensive "pun". The people responsible for this "pun" may think they're clever and witty, but they are fools and should be ashamed of themselves. |
|
Dec-19-22 | | Messiah: I'm not a christian, so I can appreciate it, very well done! |
|
Dec-19-22
 | | Check It Out: Nice game. The black rook was precariously behind enemy lines. The passed white h-pawn created on move 9 proved to be the key to the win. |
|
Dec-20-22 | | Retireborn: I *am* a Christian, if not a very good one, and I don't find the "pun" offensive at all. In Informator Nogueiras rather optimistically claims that 16...Nxe5 wins for Black. Houdini assesses 16...Nxe5 17.fxe5 Bb5 as equal. Another possibility for Black is 16...Na5 17.g4 Bb5. |
|
Dec-20-22
 | | perfidious: Whatever one's religious beliefs, in no way do I find the pun offensive and consider the criticism de trop. |
