On the suggested 12. a3, Black can try 12...fxe5! which looks like a strong attack: 12. a3 fxe5 13. axb4 exd4 14. Nc2 d3+ 15. Ne3 Ng4+ wins the piece back with dividends.
Jun-29-05  mymt: <beatgiant> Im shot down in flames again,didnt consider dumping the B,nice one.Only other one I liked was 12.g3 fxe5 13.dxe5 Bc5 14.Qe2

On 12. g3 fxe5 13. dxe5 Bc5 14. Qe2, Black takes advantage of the pin again with <14...Ng4+> winning a piece.
Jun-29-05  mymt: OH DEAR looks like Im stuck with that ugly 12.Kg3. is there nothing I can drum up with 12.g3 fxe5 13.Nxe5?
Jun-29-05  Knight13: <mymt: is there nothing I can drum up with 12.g3 fxe5 13.Nxe5?> After 12. g3 fxe5 13. Nxe5 Nxe5 14. dxe5 Bc5 15. Bd3 Bxe3+ 16. Bxe3 Qxb2+ 17. Kg1 d4! 18. Bd2 Bc6. Or 15. Qe2? Bxe3+ 16. Bxe3 d4! and White loses the bishop. (17. Bd2 d3+!! 18. Qe3 Ng4+).
Jun-29-05  mymt: only thing I can see is 17.Qc2 to block the check because 17.Bd2 gets hit by ...Qd4+ 18.Be3 Ng4+.Now maybe 17. ...Ng4+ 18.Kf3 Nxe3 19.Kxe3 d4+ 20.Ke2
Jun-29-05  Knight13: <mymt> 17. Qc2 Qxc2+ 18. Bxc2 Ng4+ 19. Ke2 Rac8 20. Bb3 Nxe3 21. Kxe3 Rc3+ 22. Ke2 g5 and Black can wins endgame. I think 17. Qc2 is better than 17. Kg1, too.
Jun-29-05  mymt: 21. ...Rc3+ 22.Kd4
Jun-29-05  mymt: <Knight13> I noticed your question about "sudden death" time control,it seems you havent played OTB Tournaments very often or you would surely have come accross it. Many chess club also use that time control to avoid adjournments. If you dont belong to a club you should join ,I think you will like it.

Jun-29-05  Knight13: <mymt> The reply to your last post here has been posted at the Kibitzer's Cafe, page 1269, by me.
Jun-29-05  Boomie: Although white is probably lost no matter what, there was a small resource on move 12 which holds the position for a while.

12. ♘c2 ♗e7 13. ♔g3 ♗e8 14. ♗d3 ♗h5 15. ♖e1 ♖ac8 16. ♖e2 fxe5 17. dxe5 ♘f5+ 18. ♔h3 ♗xf3 19. gxf3 ♗c5 20. ♖g2 (-1.19) D=14

Jun-29-05  mymt: thanks <Boomie> Im afraid your right . <Knight13> saw your post & replied on page 1283 [I think it was]
Jan-27-06  MorphyMatt: is this the only game with notes by Morphy?
Jan-27-06  aw1988: No. Morphy annotated many more encounters between MacDonnell and LaBourdonnais.
Jan-28-06  morpstau: is this the only game with notes by Morphy
Jan-28-06  aw1988: No, and I just answered that...
Nov-19-06  slomarko: white played like drunk
Dec-25-07  whiteshark: The historically first <big clamp> ?!
Aug-08-09  just a kid: Very convincing play from la bourdonnais.
Feb-02-12  Knight13: 9. Ne3 may be premature, but McDonnell didn't think so. In other games with the same opening, he would happily capture the d4 pawn with the c-pawn anyway when taking it with the Knight is the correct choice and take the bishop check even with the knight on c2. This is the third game with the same opening where I've seen McDonnell happily take the Kf2 route. However, he did learn from his mistakes and decided to castle his King in this opening in later games.
May-10-12  LoveThatJoker: If 25. Kg2, Stockfish says that Black wins in the following manner:

25. Kg2 Qc6 26. Rd1 Qc2+ 27. Rd2 Rf2+ 28. Kh3 Rxd2 29. Qxe6+ Kh8 30. Bxd2 Qd3+ 31. Qe3 Rf3+ 32. Kg2 Rxe3 33. Bxe3 Qxe3 34. Rf1 Qxg5+ 35. Kf2 Qf4+ 36. Ke2 Qe4+ 37. Kf2 Qxd4+ 38. Kf3 Qe4+ 39. Kf2 Bc5+ 40. Kg3 Qg6+ 41. Kh4 Qg2 42. Rf7 Qe4+ 43. Kh3 Qe6+

Apr-20-17  hudapri: Funny how morphy criticizes the waste of time with the knight but not the daring Steinitz like adventure of the king.

offramp: When Morphy got that highly paid job with the Neue Orleanische Schachzeitung he may have asked the editor what he should write about and been told to write about the favourite games of his youth: the Lab-Mac games.

When he had a look at the games with his cold adult eyes he experienced a frisson of Hammer-like terror.

To his expert brain the games would have been a catalogue of every type of human failure and error, from spilling soup to dropping nuts.

He stared at the games, open-mouthed. Then, weeping, he repeated the heart-rending words of Archie McLaren:

<"My God, look what they've sent me!">

No wonder his notes are terse.

Apr-25-17  hudapri: I think he respected these players, he often admires La Bourdonnais

keypusher: <offramp> <hudapri> is right, as I suspect you know. Looking at Morphy's notes to this game, however, we can see that being forced to annotate Staunton's games genuinely would have wrung tears from Morphy.
