Brno (1937) |
Brno is a city in South Moravia in the Czech Republic. The tournament took place from 7 to 28th October 1937. Organized by the "Stadion Chess Club", Brno.
The Latvian Alexander Koblents, later famous as Tal's trainer, won the tournament. "The Bratislava matador and experienced international Desider May is the King of Draws of the tournament. That would not be anything special, but the complete novelty is that he defended and defied these draws tooth and nail. Sometimes he was successful (against Barta), sometimes it was in vain (against Hostinský); he fought directly and fiercely yet to make peace after all. He had bad luck indeed, but he bore it in excellent spirits, showing a master in this respect as well as in the game." (Jan Bárta – Mezinárodní šachový turnaj v Brně 1937, "International Chess Tournament in Brno"). 1
