Introduction
Only one class to be opened. Three prizes to be given, one to each of the three players winning the greatest number of games. Drawn games to count as half won and half lost to each player. Intending competitors can enter their names at once with the Secretary. Entries to be closed at the meeting, at 10 p.m., on the 13th of May. The method of play and of pairing competitors to be arranged at the meeting by the majority of those entered present. Entrance fee to none members of the association, $2. Should the players present at the meeting desire it, a second-class of Minor Tourney will be held also.(1)
Twenty competitors entering were paired by lot, winners and losers of the first round being again paired separately, and so on until three games were recorded. (2)
The lists of the tourney comprised twenty competitors, who were paired against each other by lot, the winners and losers in the first round being again paired separately, and so on till three games were recorded. At this stage Messrs. White and Ensor, of Montreal, were found to have each won three games, and the fourth game between these two to decide the first prize was watched with breathless interest by a large circle of spectators; it ended in favour of Mr. Ensor, who thus became entitled to the prize of $50. Meantime the result of the other fighting had left on the field Messrs. Jackson, of Seaforth; Mackay, of Hamilton; and F. T. Jones and Gordon, of Toronto. Mr. Jackson succeeded in defeating his antagonists, and was then called upon to face Mr. White over the board to decide the order of the second and third prizes. This, the final game of the tourney, excited no less interest than the former, and was gained by Mr. Jackson, who thus won the second prize of $25, the third of $10 falling to Mr. White.(3)
Rounds one through three appear to be a Swiss Elimination which reduced the field of twenty down to ten participants. In the fourth round Ensor and White, the two undeafeted players contested for the championship, which was won by Ensor, while the remaining competitors battled it out in a knock-out stage to determine the challenger for John White to settle honors for second and third place.
