Synopsis
Entries for the annual championship tournament of the Brooklyn Chess club closed last night, when the committee drew up a schedule for the entire two rounds, with the following five players as competitors: H. Helms, the present champion; J. C. Tatum, S. G. Ruth, F. J. Marshall and R. A. Breckinridge. All of these, with the exception of Junior State Champion Marshall, competed last year, when Helms captured the prize in a field of thirteen, including such men as Showalter, Delmar and Rocamora. It will be seen, therefore, that the present list of aspirants is much below that of last year, both in strength and numbers. The first games of the contest are booked to played this afternoon and evening. (1)
It is possible that the boy champion, Napier, may be allowed to enter, in which case there will be six entries. (2)
Slow progress is being made in the Brooklyn club's championship tournament, which this year seems to be a free and easy sort of an affair, considering the importance of the contest. The chief reason for the delay is the inability of some of the competitors to attend on the regular play nights, a fact which had tended to throw the entire schedule out of gear. (3)
With the defeat of Tatum at the hands of Marshall in the final game of the Brooklyn Chess club's championship tournament that important but unnecessary long drawn out event has at last reached a termination. This victory, together with the game forfeited to him by Breckenridge, gives to the junior state champion third prize. (4)
