May-09-22  virginmind: Bogdan-Daniel continues his very good play in the fifth round, against much higher rated opposition, today a draw against Alireza. Unbeaten, with 3/5 points before the rest day - I'd say it's quite a feat in such a company! He does have a tendency to enter (and stay) in time trouble, but fortunately he keeps great concentration and manages to find the right moves regardless. Good luck in the next rounds!

<0ZeR0> Indeed! :)

The pairings for Round 9 (thé last round of play) are as follows:

Firouzja-Vachier-Lagrave
Dominguez-So

May-14-22  virginmind: A very solid performance by Bogdan-Daniel in this tournament, he finished with 4.5/9. A somewhat disappointing one by the top rated player here, Alireza Firoudja, who is about to lose against MVL, which will give a three-way tie for the first place. But Alireza is still trying.

perfidious: While this is a tough field, finishing minus is, shall we say, an inauspicious outcome for a player many have tipped to become Carlsen's successor.

Yes, but we have seen it quite often, haven't we. Young talents arrive at the world stage, beat a couple of veterans off-guard, surprise unsuspecting opponents, and then they all of a sudden are announced as soon-to-be the new world champion material.

Then, after a while, i.e. after some tough tournaments when they no longer can benefit from the element of surprise and the elite has become aware of them, victories don't come as easy anymore and even defeats and bad results may arrive.

Time and again it has been proved that it is EXTREMELY difficult to paddle through the shark-packed water of elite chess. Very very few manage to do it at all and even fewer manage to stay at the top.

May-17-22  Saniyat24: 3 cheers for MVL...!

dernier loup de T: <virginmind>: just about Garry Kasparov: in my opinion, he is one of the 7 or 8 best chess players ever, together with Morphy, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Fischer, Karpov and Carlsen. BUT, about his ideas in some other domains....: did you ever hear about so-called "RECENTISM THEORY" in History?....
