 | | MissScarlett: The chess world's favourite Syrian refugee. |
Jan-16-16 | | MCDreamz: Very likeable, this man. |
Jan-17-16 | | Howard: Regarding that priceless photo of Yasser from 1976 (see several postings above this one), that reminds me of the first time Yasser had his picture in Chess Life and Review. It was in late 1975, in Pal Benko's article on the U.S. Open. He said that there was one youngster who drew a lot of attention at the event, "not just because of his mature play, but also due to his unique appearance."
Benko said that this 15-year-old wore beads and also had thick, wavy hair. He also said "At first glance I thought he was a girl (forgive me, Yasser)". On the other hand, Benko beat Yasser in this tournament. Not only that, Yasser beat his first grandmaster there---Art Bisguier. But, also......Seirawan had a completely won position against IM Jack Peters, but fell for a trap and had to settle for a draw. And the rest is history ! |

Mar-24-16 | | TheFocus: Happy birthday, Yaz!! |
Mar-24-16 | | Howard: Well, what about Smyslov? His birthday is also today. |
Mar-24-16 | | TheFocus: <Howard> I sent him birthday wishes, too. |
May-01-16 | | mucher1: I'd wish someone would tell Seirawan not to constantly make fun of Caruana's name. The 'Don Fabi' moniker got old really fast, and 'Caryuana' is just plain wrong. |
May-01-16 | | Reisswolf: <<mucher1>: I'd wish someone would tell Seirawan not to constantly make fun of Caruana's name.> True. The "Carry-wana" mispronunciation is conspicuous. On the other hand, spare a thought for him because both of his names have often been mispronounced by others. |

 | | HeMateMe: does that girl really have red hair, or is it dyed? What about the eyes? contact lenses? Red hair and green eyes? I guess that's a typical genotype. |

May-02-16
 | | perfidious: <HMM> Only time I saw her, at Foxwoods 2000, it was dark brown, so who knows? Have not yet played poker with her.
I was much amused at your description of her as a champion elsewhere, some months ago; the event she won had a grand total of 23 players and none of the other three who cashed had done so in any other event. She would have had a much tougher time in about any live event I have played, including the one I won. |
May-02-16
 | | HeMateMe: I thought she had some history of being a winning poker player, as does her brother Greg Shahade? Perhaps their efforts were overstated. |
May-02-16
 | | perfidious: <HMM> You are correct in that Shahade has numerous smallish cashes, but for all those, there have been three which account for almost 75 per cent of her take, including the 23-player tourney: http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/pla... Before and since, deep runs, but low-level stuff.
Your humble poster has played very few live events, but cashed twice: http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/pla... Brother Greg has cashed for barely $6 K in all. |

May-02-16 | | Boomie: <mucher1: I'd wish someone would tell Seirawan not to constantly make fun of Caruana's name.> I nominate you for this assignment. Yaz always appreciates corrections. If he has made a mistake with a name, be assured that it isn't intentional. Yaz is essentially the person you see on the broadcast. He likes to laugh and is very kind to everyone. He has always had these two admirable character traits. So don't hesitate to inform him of his error. |
May-02-16 | | Boomie: <Howard: It was in late 1975, in Pal Benko's article on the U.S. Open.> I played in that Open in Lincoln, Nebraska. The whole Pacific NW contingent did great in that tournament. It was Yaz's coming out party, Uncles Vik and Jim scored well and I shared the class B prize. At the award ceremony, Yaz said to me, "Laugh all the way to the bank". That was my Summer of Chess. Before the US Open, I won the Class C prize at the Canadian Open in Calgary. |

May-03-16 | | Boomie: <perfidious: Would 'Uncle Jim' have been James McCormick, aka 'Dirty Jim'?> Yes and yes.
Jim and I had many enjoyable adventures. I may have been the only one able to get along with both Jim and Vik. Well, Yaz was friends with both, too. They were complete opposites, yet between them, they won about a dozen WA state championships. Curiously, they have the results of the 1975 Open here - Game Collection: US Open 1975, Lincoln. Notice Uncle Vik tied for 4th with 9 points. Yaz tied for 9th with 8.5. Dirty Jim and I tied for 48th with 7.5. Altogether, not too shabby for the Last Exiteers. |
May-04-16
 | | HeMateMe: so, who is "uncle Vic?" |
May-04-16 | | Howard: That would have been Victor Pupols. He was Yasser's chess coach back when the lad was just starting to learn chess. |
May-04-16 | | diceman: <HeMateMe: so, who is "uncle Vic?"> <Howard: That would have been Victor Pupols. He was Yasser's chess coach back when the lad was just starting to learn chess.> If you have to have an "Uncle Vic"
Id rather it be Korchnoi! |
May-04-16 | | Boomie: <diceman: If you have to have an "Uncle Vic" Id rather it be Korchnoi!> Well, he didn't hang out at the Last Exit on Brooklyn. Only registered Exiteers merit the "Uncle" title. |
