 | | AylerKupp: Being a French aficionado and Uhlmann fan (and having a little time on my hands), you guys made me curious. So here is what I was able to find out in the chessgames.com database. Of course, other more comprehensive databases will yield different results, but I doubt that they would change dramatically. Total number of Uhlmann games: 1,792
Total number of games with Uhlmann as Black: 898 (50.1%) Number of games White opened with 1.e4: 367 (40.9% of the 898)
Number of games Uhlmann responded with 1...e6: 360 (98.1% of the 367) Number of French defenses (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5): 343 (95.3% of the 360)
Number of non-French defenses (1.e4 e6 2.other): 17 (4.7% of the 360), all King's Indian Attacks Results when games (360) started 1.e4 e6:
a. White won: 93 (25.8% of the 360)
b. Black won: 125 (34.7% of the 360)
c. Draws: 142 (39.4% of the 360)
So apparently Uhlmann's faith in the French defense was justified. Non-French defense games (7), all Robatch/Modern: White won 0, Black won 5, Drawn 2. Csom vs Uhlmann, 1967;

We reported about the scheduled friendly match between Viktor Korchnoi and Boris Spassky over two weeks ago. It was planned to be held from March 27 in Leipzig, Germany. Let us emphesize, we got the mentioned information from Korchnoi himself.
Now it turned out Spassky haven't heard of the event. He wrote an open letter to RCF president Andrey Filatov stating it:
"I, Boris Spassky, herewith state that the information published on RCF website on March 20th, 2014 - "Boris Spassky and Viktor Korchnoi will again meet at the board" - is unexpected and unfounded.
I have never negotiated about where, when or under what conditions would be held the match against Viktor Korchnoi; I haven't ever given my agreement on playing such a match to anyone." Yesterday, the first game has been played, Chess-news.ru gives the following additional information, and the game : Korchnoi Again Plays Chess. Against Uhlmann, not Spassky Though

The match with Korchnoi's participation started in Leipzig Germany. Korchnoi's opponent is not Spassky, as it was announced earlier, but Wolfgang Uhlmann. German GM turns 79 tomorrow, while Korchnoi will turn 83 on March 23.

Wolfgang Uhlmann, expert of the french defense, former Candidate, 1971 quarter-final against Larsen, chosen as member of the "Rest of the World" team in the match vs. the USSR in 1970, leading player for decades of East Germany, eleven times champion of (then) GDR. At the 1964 chess Olympiad in Tel Aviv, Uhlmann scored 83.3 percent, earning the individual board one gold medal (note: at that time, there was a preliminary at the Olympiads and then final groups based on the previous team results, no swiss system). Brilliant tournament wins in the 1960s and 1970s: Wolfgang Uhlmann is a rare three times (sole or shared) winner at Hastings, in these days always a strong event: Uhlmann won in 1958/59 outright, in 1965/66 (shared with Boris Spassky), and tied for first again (with Bronstein and Hort) at Hastings Chess Congress 1975/76, one point ahead of Korchnoi. Uhlmann also shared victory (with Polugaevsky) at Sarajevo 1964, tied for first (with Smyslov) at Havana (Capablanca Memorial) 1964, tied for first (with Ivkov, and ahead of World Champion Petrosian - and among others Portisch, Parma, Bronstein, Larsen, Matanovic, Filip, Gligoric, Bisguier) at Zagreb 1965, tied for first (with Bronstein) at Szombathely 1966, and tied for first (with Bronstein) at the Berlin 'Lasker Memorial' in 1968. At Raach in 1969, a zonal tournament, he finished two points clear of the field (which included Lajos Portisch), placed second (behind World Champion Karpov) at Skopje 1976, finished first at Vrbas 1977, to name the maybe most notable ones. He beat at least four World Champions, from Fischer in 1960 <Fischer vs Uhlmann, 1960> to Anand in 1990 <Uhlmann vs Anand, 1990>,
Botvinnik at the Olympiad, Varna 1962 <Uhlmann vs Botvinnik, 1962>, and Smyslov <Uhlmann vs Smyslov, 1973>. In recent years, Wolfgang Uhlmann was quite a regular member of the Veterans / Old Hands ad-hoc formation in matches versus a Ladies / Snowdrops team. Uhlmann was the lower rated player (2326 vs. 2499), although I think it's nice to see 2 former world championship contenders still able to play great chess decades after their peak. |

| | kingfu: All us French Hard Heads love Uhlmann AND Korchnoi. I don't know who did the Bd7, Be8, Bh5 first. However, it should be in all our tool bags. Also, I have seen Korchnoi defend against the obligatory White kingside attack with Bd7, Be8, Bg6. Here is a Korchnoi game with Be8, Bh5 on the last 2 moves resulting in 0-1! Molander vs. Korchnoi
