Sep-12-07  pawnofdoom: Why'd this guy stop playing? He was one of the 40 guys in the database to go over 2700, and provided us with pretty cool games
Sep-12-07  dx9293: I was told by someone who I trust, "in the know," that he cracked up (because of pressure or whatever I don't know) and then quit.
Mar-03-08  ARegularPlayer: Maybe he got some death threats from Rustam Kamsky during his match with Gata in 1995 just like N Short had got. I mean Short still suffered from post traumatic stress when he played in Montreal last year.

Salov played very weak in that match.

Mar-14-08  Augalv: whatever happened to Salov? anybody knows?
Mar-14-08  Jim Bartle: In an interview with him from around 94-95, he said he wanted to go to the US or Europe and get into banking or trading stocks, where he could earn some cash. He was not happy with the amount he could earn in chess.
Mar-14-08  MichAdams: Valery's entertaining website and his one-man band, the WPC, have been quiet for these last three or so: http://ajedrez_democratico.tripod.c...
Mar-16-08  Tomlinsky: Salov's efforts as Shirov's second when he defeated Kramnik, earning the right to challenge Kasparov for the title, are not often ackowledged. Shirov speaks highly of his talent with their Grunfeld preparations leaving Vladimir completely stymied.
Mar-16-08  MichAdams: The work of a second should be seen and not heard.
Mar-16-08  Prugno: He is still a member of the panel which judges the best 10 games of the previous Informant, and usually his votes are very reasonable, so perhaps he has not gone quite as totally insane as that website of his would suggest...
May-26-08  brankat: Happy Birthday Valery!
May-26-08  brankat: Had never visited this page until today. And I regret it big time, missed out on so much fun around here last year :-)

As some say: "A woman's tongue is a sword which never rusts."

May-26-08  Nikita Smirnov: S dnem rozhdenie Valja!!

(I don't have the russian letters on my keyboard)

Jun-20-08  depraved: <Troller> In fact, Salov played in the 1990 IZ in Manila, held 29.6-14.7.1990, scoring +2-2=3 before withdrawing. Anyone suppose it was the enervating lowland climate of the Philippine summer that did him in? At least the organisers of Korchnoi-Karpov 1978 had the sense to hold that match in Baguio City, in relatively cooler circumstances.
Jul-29-08  Caloy: <depraved>I remember that one, saw him in the first few rounds then suddenly withdrew. Reports said he has Varicella (chickenpox).

stoy: Varicella in an adult is very serious - sometimes fatal. It is good that he survived.

Benzol: Has Salov retired from chess completely?
Oct-10-09  nescio: <Benzol: Has Salov retired from chess completely?> Looks like it. There is no evidence for any games later than Las Vegas 1999. The games here 2002-2008 were all played by Sergej Salov
Jan-16-10  shalgo: Does anyone know what Anand might be referring to when he said of the queen and pawn ending in his game today that "if I could give it to Salov to play on, happy to, but not if I have to do this myself"?

Why would he mention Salov in particular, who hasn't played in ten years?

http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/chessne...

Jan-28-10  waddayaplay: here is some recent material: http://www.bs-chess.com/latin/tourn...
Jan-28-10  Mr. Bojangles: Am sure I read some where that Salov lost his mind and that he suffering mental illness.

I hope he gets better.

Jan-29-10  waddayaplay: I read a little from his web site. Got tired quickly, lots of tirades with little substance. He has some politically extreme opinions. From reading his web site I am not sure what they are, but he mentions Israel, chess politics, and some people he has a grudge again: Seirawan, Kasparov and the editor of TWIC.
Mar-26-10  wordfunph: "I almost withdrew after winning the first mini-match against Chinese GM Ye. I caught the flu and was quite ill, but fortunately my sense of professionalism got the upper hand and I continued to play. I drank a lot of hot milk and recovered. I told my wife Tanya that if I survived my first match, I would make it to the final and that's exactly what happened."

GM Valery Salov (after winning the 1994 Tilburg's first prize of $54,550)

Mar-26-10  wordfunph: "Rating is important nowadays. If mine goes down under 2600, it is time to consider another profession and I mean that." (in 1994)
May-22-10  indianchessupdates: one of the forgotten players
May-27-10  uscfratingmybyear: Maybe he retired cuz he was worn out from playing for 5 years before he was born.
