Jul-28-07  sanyas: Some random Cuban amateur?
Jul-28-07  Karpova: A <random amateur> winning against players like Chajes, Kupchik and Jaffe??

He is said to have won "The Dewar Cup" in 1914, 1920 and 1937 http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/...

He was <‘an exceptional caricaturist, a graduate of the Escuela de San Alejandro in Havana’> http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... (scroll down to 3475)

Jul-28-07  sanyas: Aha, so that's who he was. Should have known to check the back cover of the 9/1974 issue of Jaque Mate.
Jul-29-07  Karpova: The 8th chess olympiad in Buenos Aires with Blanco representing Cuba: http://www.olimpbase.org/1939/1939f...

Capablanca's last triumph and a truly great one. He received the gold medal for his perfromance at the first board (ahead of Alekhine): http://www.olimpbase.org/1939/1939i...

As one can see Ludwig Engels from Germany had the insane winning percentage (board 3) of 86.4 % and Germany won the Final ahead of Poland and Estonia.

  offramp: "Rafael Blanco Estera".

Isn't that an unfinished sentence?

Doesn't it mean, "Rafael Blanco will be ...."?

I wonder what he was going to be?

Dec-01-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, Rafael Blanco.

No, it doesn't. "Will be" = "Estará".

But since this verb would be a conjugation of "Estar", not "Ser" (some nice feature of the Spanish language, a split between the temporary or merely possible and the permanent or essential status of "To be"), the question should be "where" or "how" and not "what".

"Estera" is a mat, or something like that I guess.

BTW- here's a link to one of Estera's caricatures:

Sure looks like Obama upon learning that Trump won.
