LJUBOMIR LJUBOJEVIC
(born Nov-02-1950, 74 years old) Yugoslavia (federation/nationality Serbia)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Ljubomir Ljubojevic was born in (Titovo) Užice, Yugoslavia. He was awarded the IM title in 1970 and the GM title in 1971. He placed first in the Canadian Open of 1974. He was Yugoslav Champion in 1977 (jointly) and 1982.

By the early 1980's he was ranked third in the Elo rating list but he never succeeded in reaching the Candidates stage of the World Championship. This was partly due to unsteadiness and opening experimentation. On his day he was dangerous to anyone but a lack of consistency prevented him from making an impact on world championship cycles. He did achieve a number of strong tournament victories, including Linares 1985 (shared with Robert Huebner), Brussels 1987 (shared with Garry Kasparov), Belgrade 1987, Barcelona 1989, and Melody-Amber 1993.

DrNyet: This would be his *63rd* birthday according to the date of birth given in the bio. :)
Mar-29-15  zanzibar: It's nice to have a fairly recent photo, but a little unfortunate that he's only in profile.

An interesting array of older photographers of a younger GM can be found here:

http://www.gahetna.nl/collectie/afb...

A suggested edit for the bio:

"In his day" was probably intended instead of "On his day".

But I would prefer a little more nuanced phrasing, say...

"On game day he was a danger to any given player, but lacked ...".

May-22-15  TheFocus: <...Every person has their own moment of lucidity. Even a chess player who is objectively considered as a weaker player can have ingenious ideas. The only question is if he will use that moment of lucidity to make a good result worthy of that ingenious idea…> - Ljubomir Ljubojevic, asked if he had some unique ability to find surprising moves.
May-24-15  TheFocus: <I have won many games that have not made me happy and when I lose, I am also not happy. My friends ask 'so when are you happy?' That's the way chess is; you are happy only rarely; the rest is grief> - Ljubomir Ljubojevic.
Nov-02-15  diagonal: Happy birthday Ljubo! Best wishes from Switzerland for a giant player from the era of the fighters.

Ljubojevic was ranked <sole third of the World> in both half-year ELO lists in the year 1983 and has won many strong international tournaments including Wiik aan Zee in 1976 (together with Olafsson, ahead of Tal).

Nov-27-15  Howard: Just noticed when browsing through Informant 34 last night that Ljubo didn't play in the 1982 interzonals----quite a surprise considering that he was a top-10 player at the time.

Anyone know why ?

Nov-27-15  Petrosianic: Probably didn't qualify.
Nov-27-15  Nerwal: One guess is that the Yugoslav zonal was set at about the same time than Tilburg 1981 where Ljubojevic played.
Nov-27-15  Olavi: According to Timman in Schaakwerk I, Hort and Ljubojevic protested against the decision to award the six ratings based slots only on the basis of the 1.7.1981 Elo list. I believe at least in Hort's case that meant he declined an automatic qualification.
Nov-29-15  Howard: Why would they have used the 1-7-1981 list ? Wouldn't the 1-1-82 list have been more logical?

  perfidious: From another post:

<+ Bilbao 1987: GM Ljubojevic was complaining before the tournament started. He was attacking the organizers for inviting females (Chiburdanidze and Susan Polgar). Ljubojevic maintained that the tournament was too strong for women. His score against Chiburdanidze and Susan Polgar was 0-2!>

Oh, the irony--this rather reminds one of what transpired for the losers in Tarrasch-Yates and Capablanca-Bernstein in their first meetings.

Aug-04-16  brankat: In San Sebastian, 1911, some masters (mostly Nimzovitch) were complaining about Capablanca's and Vidmar's invitation to the premier tourney and suggested they should be in a minor one.

Capablanca won the event, and Vidmar shared the second place 1/2 a point behind :-)

perfidious: Pas mal, for a pair of 'minor masters' who did not belong.
Aug-04-16  morfishine: Sir <Lobo> is such a great player over the years and such an endearing personality. A real credit to chess. This is a person to not only be admired, but emulated and followed by example

Sep-23-16  brankat: Only six pages of kibitzing on the site of one of the most talented/spectacular players ever!
Nov-02-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, Ljubomir Ljubojevic.
Nov-02-17  joeyj: Happy 67th birthday GM Ljubojevic, Ljubomir !|
Nov-02-17  joeyj: He is still active playing in the Rapids & Blitz.
Apr-30-18  SimonWebbsTiger: Never let him be commentator/interviewer again!

The post game interviews at Shamkir 2018 were a travesty.

Apr-30-18  morfishine: <SimonWebbsTiger> Take it easy on Lobo. Commentating in all fields/sports takes time to adjust.

Most commentators who transition from their sport "to the booth", start out nervous and flat, but improve over time.

Apr-30-18  Howard: He was ranked #3 in the world back on the FIDE January, 1983 list.

One can easily guess who the two players were ranked ahead of him, but here's a subtle hint: Fischer was not one of them.

May-01-18  SimonWebbsTiger: @Morfishine

I respect Ljubo but not those stupid questions he came up with. I am reminded of a painful moment when Tiviakov asked Nakamura, I forget which tournament, what he thought about the US bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Hikaru, quite rightly, gave a disgusted look and said he was there to talk chess.

May-01-18  morfishine: <SimonWebbsTiger> I searched for his interviews but was unsuccessful. If you could provide a link, that would be much appreciated. If not, thats ok
Nov-02-18  Ironmanth: Happy birthday, Ljubo!
Apr-05-23  pazzed paun: Has anyone bought the Zeno Franco’s book about Ljubo?
