Dec-04-09  wordfunph: Happy Birthday "Searching for Bobby Fischer"..
Dec-04-09  SufferingBruin: Happy Birthday, Mr. Waitzkin. His voice has been teaching my students through "Chessmaster" for a few years now. Great program.
Dec-12-09  tentsewang: I read his book "the art of learning" and he has totally changed how i think about the concept of learning in every competitive field in this world today and made me a better chess player. Invest time in loss! You are the best Josh!!
May-09-10  renumeratedfrog: I think he gave up chess once he realized he will never become a grandmaster. For very competitive people, that would be unbearable.
May-09-10  Aware: He could have become a grandmaster...still can if he really wanted.
May-19-10  SirChrislov: His win against T.Shaked is missing, from the first championship he won.

It's funny that he lost the final of his first national with Arnett by falling into the trap e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 Bc4 Nd4 Nxe5? Qg5 Ng4? d5!.(they were 8 yrs old.) That game is also missing. And the following year, he won the final with another trap, except this time his opponent Shaked was the one who fell into it.

May-19-10  black.pr0jekt: hes a nub
Jun-24-10  4theloveofchess: The guy couldn't become a grandmaster if his life depended on it! Everyone knows that by now...

"Josh is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ...with a goal of becoming a world champion in that martial art by 2010 or 2011" - a brown belt dreaming of becoming a world champ??? Come on kid, don't embarrass yourself!

All this guy has mastered is self promotion, this skill comes easy with deep pockets, just like any other "achievements".

Jul-26-10  TheFocus: <4theloveofchess>< The guy couldn't become a grandmaster if his life depended on it! Everyone knows that by now...

Actually, each belt color in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (which Josh takes) has a world championship tournament - blue, purple, brown and black.

Aug-24-10  JohnstownChess: @4theloveofchess actually a brown belt in Gracie BJJ is very good. The Gracies do not give out black belts the way your strip mall karate McDojo does. Very few gracie BJJ black belts in the world. Many very good MMA fighters will only have a brown belt, and it is true that they also have world champs for each respective belt level. So who knows?

chancho: Adult belt colors (16 and over) in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

White Belt.
Blue Belt.
Purple Belt.
Brown Belt.
Black Belt.
black red belt.
Red

Aug-24-10  TheFocus: Average time to advance up a belt is 2 - 3 years. Purple belts would have the knowledge and skills to teach. A purple belt in BJJ is the equivalent of a black belt in any other system (just can't promote).
Dec-04-10  chess man: Happy birthday Josh Waitzkin! You helped me discover the amazing world of chess nine years ago; and for that I thank you.
Feb-13-11  obsesschess: No matter what anyone says about the guy, his GOTD today is great value. Plus the lessons on Chessmaster he narrates are very useful to players of all levels.
Feb-13-11  Lil Swine: considering they use fischer's name but yet pay him nothing, and then call him crazy for ranting. The people who are stupid enough to refuse fischer money are jackasses. respect your elders people

Penguincw: I wonder when Joshua Waitzkin will become a grandmaster.
Feb-14-11  rapidcitychess: <Penguin> He quit. Something about mastering Brazilian jujitsu or something like that... :)
Feb-14-11  Appaz: <<Lil Swine> considering they use fischer's name>

The movie is not too bad as a movie, except for the usual Hollywood clichés, but seen as biographical story it's pure trash.

You can read more fascinating stuff on Jeff Sarwer, the pages of the real opponent of Waitzkin.

Feb-14-11  Shams: <Penguincw> <Maybe he'll come back to the chess world though.>

After his career as a shoulder model falls through? (This picture still annoys me.)

I think he has somewhat soured on the competitive aspects of chess. I recall him issuing a broad warning to parents of talented youngsters.

Jul-05-12  Faustio: ... or how about the "Art of not becoming a Grandmaster despite having decades of time to study, and only missing it by a score of points."

Instead, lets play "Eastern, philosophical Hand-Tapping" to demonstrate our incredible polymathic and versatile abilites.

Dec-04-12  jovack: I'm loving the people coming here to talk smack about him. There will always be haters. "ya wat an idiot, he didnt reech GM so therefore i can make fun of him because im posting on a chess website, which make me qualified"

perfidious: <jovack> True enough-it takes only a computer and some slight knowledge of the game to qualify some out there-in their minds, anyway.

I remember Josh from some US Amateur team events in the early 1990s; the kid could play. One suspects more than a little jealousy because this player chose to pursue other activities. It was the right thing for him to do, and that should be good enough for others. Who is anyone to judge in that way?

Dec-04-12  jowels: I am so glad he is player of the day today. Such a funny bio. Basically he had a positional coach who was forcing positional style play when Josh was all about tactics & attacking. He blames the reason he fell out of love with the game was because he was being forced into a cookie cutter mold which wasn't suited for him. Either way, he brought me to the game!
