FRITZ (COMPUTER)
(born 1991) Germany

[what is this?]

Fritz is a German chess program developed by Frans Morsch and Matthias Feist. It is one of the strongest commercially available chess programs.

The latest version of the consumer product is Fritz 10, but previous versions such as Fritz 3 were running as early as 1995. In 2002, a version of Fritz specifically designed for multi-processing, Deep Fritz (Computer), tied Vladimir Kramnik in Bahrain, with a match score of 4-4. In November 2003, X3D Fritz (Computer), a version of the program with a 3D interface, drew a four-game match against Garry Kasparov. In November of 2006, Fritz defeated Kramnik 4-2 in a rematch.

Pocket Fritz (Computer) is a version that is compatible for mobile device play. In 2000, it won the World Computer Speed Chess Championship.

Feb-24-07  hitman84: <midknightblue>copy the engine file(fritz.eng) from the Fritz installed folder and paste it in the "engines" folder of the installed chessbase folder.
Feb-25-07  midknightblue: hitman84, I thought it would be something simple like this but I was worried I would break something. Will give it a try and let you know how it works. Thank you very much for responding to my question :)
Mar-05-07  midknightblue: OK, I tried it, but it doesnt work. In fritz 10, they have changed the file from fritz.eng to "fritz10.engine" and apparently put up some kind of blockade, so that you can not use fritz 10 engine on chessbase, unless you are updated to chessbase 9. there is some discussion of the matter here... http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache...
Mar-05-07  hitman84: umm.. marketing gimmicks, I guess and they did'nt say that upfront very bad!
Mar-08-07  midknightblue: yea, kind of shady marketing. They are trying to force all Fritz 10 buyers to upgrade to chessbase 9, but dont have the integrity to say it up front.
Apr-15-07  Knight13: Ernest F Pecci

Is he the only guy that beat Fritz with 1. e4 h5! as Black? (Fritz vs E F Pecci, 2001) :)

Apr-20-07  laskersteinitz: Fritz is for losers.
Apr-21-07  Voxation: Which program is better to improve your game with, the latest Fritz or the latest Chessmaster? Which one is stronger?
Apr-21-07  argishti: Chessmaster all the way!! (the 10th eidition)
May-09-07  tal lover: Anyone try to play blindfolded games in Fritz(give the moves with the keyboard)? It work good?
Jun-20-07  skiskichess5: I like to play against Fritz 8 in Friend mode, despite it's bizarre moves if I go down in material.

I've noted however that if I turn on infinite analysis, Fritz then starts to play the top move shown in infinite analysis despite that Friend mode is still signalled at the top of the screen.

The reason I switch on infinite analysis is that I'm curious to see how far down the infinite analysis list are the moves that Fritz plays in Friend mode (well in fact as I say above Fritz seems to play the best top move).

Thus, does anyone know how to keep Fritz truly in Friend mode when infinite analysis is switched on ... maybe it is impossible.

Jul-19-07  Oregon104: ahmadov,

Chessmaster has puzzles.

Nov-26-07  shr0pshire: For those who have Fritz 11, what do they think of it? Is the playing strength as strong as it was advertised?

not a bad game by both, fritz sac a bishop for 2 pawns and i returned the favor in a way i didn't imagine that it would have such impact..

<shr0pshire: For those who have Fritz 11, what do they think of it? Is the playing strength as strong as it was advertised?>

i say no...i'm not sure why its slow .. from my computer or the software it self, because i got a Duo computer which is supposed to be fast, fritz just take like 1 up to 5 min a move.

Mar-22-08  sallom89: i forgot to mention that i offered a draw and Fritz 11 accepted it.
Mar-22-08  minasina: <sallom89>...well, should there even be any benefit, if you had a duo computer (dual core processor?) or not, because you have Fritz (= single processor version), not Deep Fritz (= multiprocessor version)?
Mar-23-08  sallom89: <minasina>

i think it said having two processors makes it better & faster, i'm not sure but i did read that somewhere.

and if u go to engine->chess benchmark.. it says "2 logical processors found, then it says "processors to use 2".

then when u run a 2 processors test it says relative speed 2.12 , kilo nodes per second 1016.

one processors test gives relative speed 1.14, kilo nodes per second 547.

now i believe it uses both processors, but if i'm wrong someone enlighten me please, many thanks.

Mar-24-08  minasina: <sallom89>...yes, of course I understand that faster and better computer is faster and better. I even don't know if there is already in Fritz 11 features which were formerly only in 'Deep'-versions. (There even doesn't exist any Deep Fritz 11, or does it?) Hope someone is going to answer to your questions...
Mar-24-08  minasina: <sallom89>...btw, I have understood that there are hash tables settings and other adjustments that have an effect on fastness. If using Windows Vista, better switch Aero off, and so on ...
Mar-24-08  sallom89: <minasina> i don't think there is deep fritz 11 out, what is Areo lol ? and yes i'm using Vista, when i open fritz it says "loading frtiz 11, 1635MB". i wonder if this is bad or good ;o

this is the hash table thing i think.

<Hope someone is going to answer to your questions...>

i hope so too.. somehow some people say fritz is fast but mine is slow while the computer is fast, complicated :/

Mar-28-08  sallom89: <minasina> thanks for all your help man, i really appreciate it. But i still don't get why my fritz is slow :P someone else with fritz 11 should help ;o

Mar-31-08  MichAdams: <If chess to you means getting beaten within the first couple of moves - every single time without fail - then, Fritz, developed by ChessBase might just be what you’re looking for. It’ll arrive on the Nintendo DS this October.>

http://www.nintendic.com/news/2095

For October, read next March. Otherwise, this is most welcome news.

Mar-31-08  sallom89: <MichAdams> o man.. since you Kibitzers pass by why don't i get an answer lol :P
