Nov-17-06  kcb: Can anyone tell me more about the rating tnat chessmaster 10attains and the personalities i can play against?
I CREATED AN CHESSMANIAC ACCOUNT,but there's still no activation email?
Dec-22-06  MagnaPsygnosis: <argishti>
Yes I will agree with you on one thing, cm10000 is very strong and plays relatively unorthodox but... will it beat shredder.

James Demery: I just bought CM 10,000 and I must say it is very humbling. I previuosly had CM 7000 and I could hold my own and occasionally beat the personalities at the 1700 level. On CM 10,000 however , I`ve lost 4 games in a row to a 1203 rated personality. Somebody please help !!!
Jan-24-07  soughzin: Bought this today and already noticed an error on one of the monster knight quizzes. It stopped me on the second move of 14 or so after I thought I finally had it lol but I checked an there's multiple solutions. So far it's a cool program although probably geared to more of beginners or a younger crowd. The boards are slick and nice. The learning section is probably where the bang for the buck is. The engine won't be THE strongest but doesn't really need to be with others available for free(and since it's better than any of us anyway). Ok that's my snapshot review, maybe I'll post more in a month or so.
Jan-24-07  jahhaj: <James Demery> I think that's a common experience with computers. They don't have the most varied play and subconciously or not you learn how play against them. But then switch to a different model with a different style of play and you get beaten.

Hang in there and you'll soon be beating the thing again. After all it shouldn't be playing better at rating 1203 than at 1700 should it?

Jan-24-07  whiskeyrebel: some of the personality styles programmed into my CM are silly and annoying. I usually play with "players" rated between 2000-2400. Many of them lay back and even seem to let you gain an advantage for training purposes and then suddenly slaughter you in a flurry of tactics ( I'm USCF 1920 or so rated ). I win about as often as I should though. Even some of the 1200-1500 "players" pull off drawing tricks human players wouldn't at that level. That drives me to swear alot and throw things. I've had plenty of good times with my CM though in spite of my complaints.
Jan-25-07  Thrajin: I have created numerous opening books and personalities for CM 10K based on real GMs (and some strong players who never were officially GMs - Nezhmetdinov, Philidor, La Bourdonnais etc). If anyone is interested in my opening books, pictures, or personalities check my profile (2nd paragraph on) for more details.
Feb-05-07  ojokok: I am happy with CM 10th, but I am very dissapointed with lack of 2D boards. On the Gamespot review of CM 10th I've read that custom chess sets are avaliable to download, but I couldn't find it anywhere. There is nothing on official page.anyone have a clue?
Feb-20-07  Tacticstudent: <ojokok> www.chessmaster.com - In fact, you can download almost 5 more types of 2D boards there.

Feb-21-07  ojokok: <Tacticstudent> thanx I found it, but it seems that all new chess sets has same pieces (which I don't prefer) from original Chessmaster 10 and only board differs.I've download chess set editing tool on that page so I'll try to import some better chess sets.

attacks that might have worked against humans

May-09-07  tal lover: I try a lot to play blindfolded games in chessmaster 9000 and 7000, but when you enter a impossible move the keyboard commands just stop to work. Anyone have the same problem? Im really angry about this
May-10-07  mikee: does anybody know if they are coming out with a new chessmaster
Jul-27-07  JG27Pyth: < cotdt:><In Chessmaster X (and previous versions), there are some 1200 rated personalities that pla stronger than the 2000 rated personalties. And the mistakes are not human at all. They play perfect and then just give you a free piece. Not realistic at all.>

Quite right.

I've learned that with CM at lower levels quite a bit depends on the specific personality -- some lower rated personalities play perfect chess but only to a strictly limited ply, like one or two ply. These are the personalities that play instantaneously, or nearly so. They can be good training partners, since they just won't bite on simple tactical traps... and they JUMP on any little two-move opportunities they find. They force you to use sound(er) positional and combinational play. Other personalities play very high level chess but throw in the occassional random move, usually a pointless minor piece sac on a pawn. Those personalities are a waste of time IMO. Who wants to play a "1300" opponent who plays an impenetrable Karpov-like 2700 style for long stretches of time, and is basically invincible until he decides to blunder away a piece or two, appropos of nothing.

Chessmaster X has _lots_ of bugs and glitches IMO (Ubisoft has declared it isn't going to patch it anymore) but is in the end a decent chess interface and a good opponent can be configured for just about anyone.

What chessmaster does worst, IMO, is play patzer chess. It just doesn't play poorly, well. It doesn't know how to find those weak, clumsy, squint-eyed, timid moves, those despairing and confused oh-what-the-hell-it's-only-a-game, moves... which is why I should be put on the CM development team.. I CAN find those moves.

Aug-15-07  whiteshark: He who's looking for a reason will find such.
Aug-19-07  vonKrolock: A game between two personalities. Hundreds of such games were played, but I saved for posterity <!?> just very few ones - here they are almost (ore even over) human... White to Play and Win: <a nice puzzle!!>

Aug-19-07  realbrob: Well, once I beat chessmaster's Larry Christiansen mode pretty easily with White. The engine played a Scandinavian and immediately lost the initiative. Since Larry Christiansen is a GM and I'm not even a master, I suppose the Christiansen mode wasn't playing like the real Christiansen, unless I became a chess genius in the 30 minutes I spent playing that game.
Sep-03-07  vesivialvy93: ...i have windows xp and with this game i can only create players names on the login page ...login doesn,t work why ? and what,s wrong ?
Sep-04-07  timhortons: <mikee>these october 2007 theyre comin out with a chessmaster grandmaster edition...i had a chess master 10th edition and my playin partner there when ever i had a time is its 1701 rated player T.C....these i always had a chance of beating using the fischer time of 5 minutes with 3 second increment...there database i observe is composed of games of masters with playing strenth less than 2500
Sep-20-07  vesivialvy93: everithing is ok now , it works well!
<james demery> about the fact that 10th edition is harder to beat than cm 7000 and others ....this is not an illusion at all ! all personality are playing better under 2200 elo than previous version , i make cm 7000 playing 35 rated games against my old dedicated computer saitek cosmos and on cm7000 it plays around 2080 in blitz games aainst the 10th ed it plays after 45 games only 1740 then it is the ultimate proof that the ratings are much more accurate on 10 th edition , my little comp cosmos cannot play weaker or stronger it is a machine thats all !but don't feel bad about it , it's better to be rated 300 pts less , and if you can catch up your rating on cm 7000 on 10th edition you will be at least 300 pts stronger.
Sep-24-07  xrt999: Ive used all of the latest CM's but still prefer and use CM6000. The later versions didnt really offer anything different or unique. I bought them, tried them out for a few months then gave them away as gifts and resorted back to my beloved 6000 which I purchased around 1999.

The most frustrating thing for me about playing CM is after you make your move, then the bottom of the screen says something like "mate in 9" and your on move 14.

The second most frustrating thing is if you have the "think lines" window open and after making your move as white, the counter jumps to "-2.37" and you are sitting waiting for the bomb to drop....which you cant see because its 5 forced moves deep.

Jan-06-08  xrt999: My draw against CM 2 days ago. Time control: 30 minutes per side. Any comments would be appreciated!

Jan-08-08  timhortons: <realbrob> wow thats amzing for you to beat the christiansen personality of chessmaster.....i myself lay claim on drawing "vanessa" i blundered a move but she blundered a move as well the pgn is on my forum..sure they were programMED to do such for in a post game analysis chessmaster recognize the blunder that was make...vanessa at 2300 is more difficult to beat than summit, minimardi, roce who are icc computers...chessmaster at such elo strentgh would play more accurately<vonkrolock> HOW WOULD YOU LET THE TWO PERSONALITY OF CHESSMASTER PLAY?
Jan-08-08  timhortons: <XRT999> who is the chessmaster personality that you drawn?is that the 10th edition?i bought my cm 10th ed 2 years ago at future shop in downtown montreal...if i find the grandmaster edition ill surely get one...maybe the new one is a hundred elo stronger than the other
Jan-08-08  Tomlinsky: I wondered what Kris Kristofferson was doing these days.
