ANDREW SOLTIS
(born May-28-1947, 77 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Andrew Eden Soltis was born on May 28, 1947 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. He and Marcy Soltis have been married since 1981.

In 1970, Soltis played second board on the gold-medal-winning US team in the 17th World Student Team Championship and tied for the best overall score, 8–1. He was also a member of the silver-medal-winning US teams in the 14th and 18th World Student Team Championships.

Soltis won Reggio Emilia (1971/72). FIDE awarded him the International Master title in 1974. His first-place finishes in New York international tournaments in 1977 and 1980 resulted in him receiving the International Grandmaster title in 1980.

He won the Marshall Chess Club Championship a record nine times (1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1979, 1986, and 1989). He competed in the US (Closed) Championship in 1974, 1977, 1978 and 1983. He tied for first place in the 1977 and 1982 US Opens.

Soltis has been inactive in tournaments since 2002. He reached his playing peak as a competitive player in January 1971, when he was ranked No. 74 in the world.

Soltis is a prolific author, having written about 50 chess books and pamphlets. He has written the "Chess to Enjoy" column in Chess Life magazine for decades. He was inducted into the United States Chess Hall of Fame in September 2011.

Soltis is one of the few American grandmasters who was not a chess professional. He worked for the New York Post for 47 years, starting as a copyboy and later becoming a reporter and chess columnist. He retired in 2014.

perfidious: Odds of B+N vs bare king 1:3000? Interesting. I had that ending twice in my career, which was well over 2000 serious games.

Had R+B vs R once, and am headed for baldness, along with the other 40% of my peers.

Feb-26-11  I play the Fred: One of the things I enjoy about Soltis' books is his voice. It's definitely serious, authoritative, with a sliver of pretense thrown in.

It's easy to imagine this guy at a party being some know-it-all that you want to slap around, but 1) you're a nice person who says no to violence and 2) this guy <really does> seem to know it all. The end result is that you claim to loathe the guy but deep down, you realize that he's the most interesting person there.

Then I heard Soltis on John Watson's Chess podcast, and lo and behold, he sounds just like a regular schlub. Cool contrast between his speaking and writing styles. Some writers sound the same on or off the page.

perfidious: At Labour Day weekend 1976, I played in the U-1800 section of the NY State Championship in Albany and had someone ask to use my set to do a post-mortem on a game: it was Andy Soltis, and he acted ordinary-not at all pretentious, as one might have expected.

It still gives me a start now and again when I see his byline under all sorts of things in the NY Post, none of which have anything to do with chess.

HeMateMe: Andy is good, but he didn't write this great 1982 front pager for the Post:

<http://www.amazon.com/Headless-Body...;

The killer whose gruesome rampage of horror spawned The Post's most famous headline, <"Headless Body in Topless Bar,"> will remain behind bars -- at least for now.

Charles Dingle, 51, was denied parole this month, for the third time in 27 years.

But in an exclusive interview with The Post at Elmira State Prison, the convicted murderer recently vowed that his fight for freedom was far from over.

Mar-01-11  Shams: When I was a complete fish I sent Soltis a question about the famous Reti where white's king on h8 draws against black's runaway h-pawn. He wrote back a very kind handwritten letter. Fan for life.
Sep-26-11  pazzed paun: anybody read that Soltis article about the 8 year rule-- where a player continues to improve in rating until about 8 years after learning the game then hit a plateau-- it is not that they cannot get better it is that they usually don't comments?
Sep-27-11  King of Nothing: <pazzed paun> There was something he wrote in one of his books about a player needing an average of 9 years to become a Master.

Me? I wouldn't know. I like the game, but I never got that good.

Feb-23-12  RookFile: <Due out 4-3-12 is What It Takes to Become A Chess Master. >

This sounds kind of interesting.

Apr-04-12  pazzed paun: i had a chance to skim what it takes to be a chess master sort of a book 2 to what to study in chess---be curious to find out if any former class A players use it to get a big jump in playing strength
Feb-08-13  Wyatt Gwyon: I didn't realize he wrote non-chess stuff until I saw his byline today on a Post article linked from Drudge. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/intern...
Mar-11-14  jerseybob: Wyatt Gwyon: Andy Soltis has worked for the N.Y. Post for over 40 years, his wife Marcy nearly that long, and chess writing has been only a small part of his excellent output. But sadly, I read in Phil Mushnick's column of Sunday 3/9/14 that the two are are hanging it up after a total of 84 years and nine months at the Post. I pray he'll at least continue the chess column.

perfidious: Nice touch from Mushnick at the end of that day's column:

<Couple of quitters.>

Mar-12-14  capafischer1: I find some of his books helpful. What I can't stand is when he only gives game fragments rather than showing the whole game. I like to see how they got to that position even if it has no notes.

perfidious: It is possible that Soltis gave portions of those games due to restrictions placed on the length of the book by his publisher.

HeMateMe: Phil Mushnick is an untalented idiot. His beat for many years at the Post was specifically to report on sports as it is covered on television. For example, it the commentating is horrible, or if certain cities have bad camera set ups, or the sound quality is bad at certain arenas he would write a column on these topics---completely boring drivel. I rarely read his column.

There was a time when the Post and the Daily News were each 25 cents, so you bought one or both of them every day, just to get the street news--find out who got bludgeoned to death, rumors or facts on politician graft, police brutality, public nudity, stuff like that. Give it a five minute skim, then throw it in the garbage. It covered things that the Times didn't, so it was worth a quick look. Since the cost of the paper went up to $1 daily, I stopped buying the Post. I'm surprised Mushnick still has a job there.

Nov-25-14  Jim Bartle: I disagree, <hmm>. He's a very talented idiot. But an idiot nonetheless.

HeMateMe: JB have you been reading the on line NY Post or News, over the years?
Nov-27-14  Granny O Doul: I like Mushnick's column, though it does get repetitive. He used to sometimes get on announcers for insulting the intelligence of the viewers, and he'd give a quote from the announcer and then explain just why the statement was insulting to viewers' intelligence. BUT he doesn't do that anymore.

At any rate, he is a whole lot better than his would-be imitator Bob Raissman in the Daily News, who once praised the "great" (sic) Warner Wolf (former ABC then CBS local sports news guy), and credited him for not spoiling results of tape-delayed broadcast games. When in fact, not only DID Wolf regularly spoil, he even held up cardboard signs with late scores at the end of the broadcast, to the consternation of all who thought themselves safe for having turned the sound off.
