ROLF MARTENS
(born Feb-22-1942, died Apr-22-2008, 66 years old) Norway (federation/nationality Sweden)

[what is this?]

Rolf Olsav Martens was born in Rødberg, Norway in 1942 during the German occupation. His family moved to Sweden in 1950. He was a unique chess talent who in 1967 became Swedish champion. He also drew a short match (3-3) with Ulf Andersson in 1969. A brilliant career was forecast, but other interests took precedence. However, he devoted considerable time to opening theoretical studies, which received much attention. In the mid-1980s, he returned to competitive chess.

Nov-30-08  Ziggurat: There is a good article on Rolf Martens in the current installment of Stefan Bücker's "Over the Horizon" column at chesscafe.com. Rolf Martens was known for his eccentric opening ideas, and in later years he had been posting lots of ideas on a Swedish message board. It would be cool if someone would preserve these posts.
Nov-30-08  whiteshark: Hey <Ziggurat>!!!

I've read this article, too. I thought I'had posted some of his French ...Nh6 ideas somewhere around here, but can't recall where.

Some personal backround from Martens himself which given in "Over the Horizon" :

<“I was born in Norway in 1942 and have lived in Sweden since 1950. I’ve worked as a welder in relatively big industries for 24 years and also have had jobs in various other fields. I was brought up as an intellectual and have a university degree with mathematics and physics as main subjects. On the web, there are some mentions of me in connection with chess. I was Swedish champion at that game in 1967 and later, after I had learned some Marxism, made some “shocking” discoveries in its opening theory.”

Martens was so left, politically, that for some years he sympathized with the ultra-left German KPD/ML (NEUE EINHEIT), a party that followed “the political line of Marx, Lenin and Mao Zedong. Apparently, it was the only party in Europe (at least) that did this. However, at some point or other in the 1980s, it too started to degenerate”.>

MissScarlett: The biographical claim he was born in Oslo (apparently based on http://www.lask.se/arkiv.asp?id=2683) is contradicted by a profile that appeared in <NIC> 1999/8, which states his birthplace was the <small township Rødberg in Norway.> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%...
