KATERYNA LAGNO
(born Dec-27-1989, 35 years old) Ukraine (federation/nationality Russia)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Ekaterina Alexandrovna Lagno (Kateryna Olexandrivna Lahno in Ukrainian) was born on December 27, 1989 in Ukraine. In 2002 she became, at the age of twelve years, four months and two days, the youngest Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in chess history. In 2007 she became the eleventh woman to be awarded the Grandmaster title.

In 2003 she won a round-robin in Kramatorsk with a performance rating of 2622, finishing a full point ahead of a field that included three grandmasters. In 2005 she became European Women's Champion after winning a tie-break match with Nadezhda Kosintseva and repeated this success in 2008. She qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012) and defeated Khaled Mona in the first round, only to fall to Georgian IM and WGM Lela Javakhishvili in the second round, thereby exiting the title contest.

In 2009 she married French GM Robert Fontaine.

Jun-29-05  Akavall: <alexapple> I think it would be spelled the same, not 100% sure though.
Jun-29-05  Akavall: I wonder Kateryna will become the next Judit Polgar?
Jun-29-05  Greatful Fred: How did a Rolling Stones song make it into Katerina's page?

alexmagnus: The spelling of Natalia Zhukova´s name (transliterated in latinic) is equal in russian and ukrainian, but in cyrillic there might be some differences in the first name (i´m not sure about the correct cyrillic spelling of "Natalia" in Ukrainian.)

alexmagnus: <Akavall> I hope,Kateryna will become the next Judit Polgar... But.. Let´s better watch and see than guess:-)
Jul-01-05  DanRoss53: As of July's rating list, Miss Lahno climbed 31 points to 2498; she is now the 8th ranked female player in the world!

alexmagnus: She was already the 6th female player in the world once... Although her rating at that time was "only" 2493..
Jul-02-05  Calli: <alexapple> I am not sure what you mean but in Russian Natalia Zhukova would be spelled Наталия Жукова. Must have your browser coding set to Unicode to see this.

alexmagnus: I know how it is spelled but this site dosen´t support cyrillic...

  alexmagnus: but I try it:
Natalia Zhukova - Íàòàëüÿ Æóêîâà
Kateryna Lahno - Êàòåðèíà Ëàãíî (In russian her first name is Åêàòåðèíà).

chessgames.com: Maybe we should switch the whole site to UTF-8, but then we'll run into some problems with previous posts.
Jul-02-05  Calli: In Microsoft Explorer, click View-Encoding-Unicode and you will see the Cyrillic in my previous post.
Jul-02-05  jahhaj: <Calli> That's a really nice trick. How did you compose a name in Cyrillic (or any other non-Latin script)?
Jul-02-05
Premium Chessgames Member
alexmagnus: Calli, not Наталия but Наталья (to see the letters click code - cyrillic), the same my post with spelling of Kateryna Lahno´s name.
Jul-02-05  jahhaj: <alexmagnus> Your's works as well, pick view-encoding-cyrillic.

However you and <Calli> have a slightly different spelling for Natalia!

Jul-02-05  Calli: <alexmagnus> You're right. I have only a little experience pa Russki.

<jahhaj> for a single word, I just used charmap.exe. Click Start-Run-charmap to pick different characters.

Anyway, don't think this is what <alexapple> is asking, but then again not sure what the question really is either.

Jul-03-05  jahhaj: <Calli> Thanks for the tip. You have to pick View-Encoding-Unicode (or whatever) before you kibitz.
Jul-03-05  jahhaj: <chessgames.com> Unicode/UTF-8 is the way to go. Maybe you could introduce it on new pages only.

alexmagnus: Mr Harvey where do you take those puzzles? I can´t believe you go through all the games of the called players searching for combos in their games.... B.t.w. some puzzles from Lahno´s games were very nice, thx.

WTHarvey: I'm glad you enjoy them! Yes, I go through them, only I start at the end of the game. I found a lot of puzzles by Katya. She's got a lot of finesse .... or is a very good hypnotist. :-)
