Jan-17-07 | | Flyboy216: <Uzi: As confusing an African elephant with an Indian one would, presumably, discredit the science of taxonomy.> The African Elephant and Asian Elephant aren't even in the same genus, let alone species. Are you suggesting the same of black people vs. white people? <A simple course in statistical concepts such as averages and Normal distributions should help to elucidate your mind.> A simple course in genetics and zoology should help elucidate yours. |

Jan-17-07 | | Maatalkko: <PawnAmbush> I love those pics showing the colorful characters in NYC chess! Wish I lived there. Or maybe I don't, because then I'd probably spend all my time out there. |
|
Jan-18-07 | | Pawn Ambush: <Maatalkko> Washshington square park is O.K. most of the time, I've never had any problem the few times I passed thru. But sometimes the knuckleheads have to show off. http://beta.uschess.org/frontend/ne...

Jan-25-07 | | ivoivanov: I thik some of the postigs are a bit rasistic. Why you guys just do not accept him as a talanted player, why you should always think of his origin, race and so on.You should stop separating the people because of their race!!! |

Feb-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: Some of the names of the many talented players of Prospect park Brooklyn. Late 80's early 90's. Maurice,Leon,<Nate>,Steve,Todd,Tyrone,Marlon,Everton,M-
el- - - - ,William,Ron,Jeff,Harry,Morgan,Craig. The list is much bigger but the names have faded with the passage of time. Nate is the guy in the light blue shirt.

Feb-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: The guy looking at you calls himself old Josie Wells. I don't know his real name. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lipan/... |
|
Feb-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: The guy on the left is Gil, a low level chess Hustler rated around 1800-1900.
This guy goes back to the <KINGSMEN CHESS CLUB> days late 80's. He now hangs out at the newly rebuilt ground zero park LIBERTY PARK. http://www.flickr.com/photos/linkbu... |
|
Feb-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: In fact here is Gil at Liberty park see the guy sitting in the back at the chess table, thats Gil. http://www.curbed.com/archives/2006... |
|
Feb-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: There used to be this old homeless guy who came into Prospect park the chess tables up the hill not down the hill. He'd go from table to table interrupting the games saying "Hey young fella you gotta a quarter I'm broke." He rarely played but I gotta tell ya he had a mean Philidor defense http://media.lawrence.com/img/photo... |
|
Jul-02-07 | | Pawn Ambush: This is the Russian Paul (white shirt) who frequents washington square park this guy is very very good at time scrambles with a minute or less, I've lost countless won positions to him were we both had like 50 seconds each. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Va5... |
|
Jul-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: I believe this is Gerald Times in action this guy is extremely quick at speed chess, I played him maybe 2 or 3 times years ago lost on time mostly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyo_... |

 | | chancho: Is Gerald Times related to Lawyer Times? |
|
Jul-03-07 | | Pawn Ambush: One afternoon on my way to work I stop by Liberty Park a.k.a. Zucutti Park, Ground Zero, World Trade Center. I saw Nate I haven't see him in about 5 years. I had time for about 5 or 6 games.I won the first he won the second and 3rd games. This is the 3rd game I'm one move away from a new Queen with about 11 or 12 seconds on my clock Nate had about 20 or 22 seconds I played the Horrible 64...kc1 and was mated by
65.Qa1# this discouraged me from any further playing I gave Nate 2 bucks. No sense being late for work if I'm playing like this I thought and left. click for larger view/

Jul-03-07 | | Strongest Force: Chancho, Gerald times is not related to Lawyer. I've known gerald since he was 14. He learned how to trash talk from playing with me. :) |

Jul-12-07 | | Petrosianic: >>
I think that making Maurice Ashley player of the day today is a nice acknowledgment to the meaning of this holiday, since his work carried the same message as that of Dr. King's.
>>
Dr. King's message had to do with playing more e4 openings?? |

Aug-01-07 | | MasterMe: Pawn Ambush I had the opportunity of playing some of the players you give links to their pictures, I played Craig and Gil among some others, Craig i played him several times at Bryan park and then i played him and Gil again several times at a building close to park avenue, but the guy who impressed me the most me being a senior master myself was Francis A Brea whom i played in that building close to park avenue, this guy gave time odds to craig and gil and still beat them most times, now he plays at a new chess club which opened in manhattan here in the website for the club http://www.bronxchess.com/ a picture of Francis A Brea you can find by clicking on photo gallery at the left and then click on simultaneuos exhibitions Brea is the guy on the first picture wearing glasses working on a loptop computer |
|
Aug-01-07 | | MasterMe: Pawn Ambush, something that maybe you don't know, William moved to Meryland to major History at UMBC back in the 1990s, by 1996 he was a FM, and won the State championship, he was known then as the exterminator, then in 1997 he played in a simultaneous exhibition at UMBC against then World champion Garry Kasparov, William was majoring History at the time, William put on a big fight on that game, but lost the endgame, he is now an International master, here he is http://www.thechessdrum.net/newsbri... |
|
Aug-06-07 | | MasterMe: this is another guy that you may want to stay away from at washigton square park Yaacov Norowitz he is not a title player but he does play like a GM specially blitz, he is rated about 2200 USCF and 2300+ USCF blitz, mostly a d4 player who plays kind of a reserve queen's india with white and queen's india with black, sometimes he playes the budapest gambit Ne4 variation, he knows many tricks on that, and he also plays karo kan with black pieces, you don't want to make a mistake when playing against his Karo Kan either, here he is playing at washington square park, he is the guy with white shirt, it seems like he is playing slow and relax but don't let that fool you, it only seems that way:

Aug-10-07 | | Pawn Ambush: <MasterMe> Thanks for the bronx link I've nevr seen Francis Brea before but if can gives odds to Craig no doubt he's a strong player. I played a lot of speed with William back '84 when we were in the Airforce together got beaten terribly. He's a great guy he'd go over the games and show were you could have played better. I think he was stationed at one point in Maryland and decided to make it his home. |
|
Aug-10-07 | | Pawn Ambush: <MasterMe> Thanks for the heads up on Yaacov Norowitz but If I get the chance I'll go ahead try my luck the next time I'm in WSP I'll be using my digital camcorder and post on you tube. |

Aug-23-07 | | Pawn Ambush: Ashley interview:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILX-... |
|
Dec-18-07 | | Prince Patzer: To that racial poster who implied that Maurice Ashley is nothing more than the automatic result of normal distributions: Maurice Ashley proves no connection to any normal distribution curve! That's because he is not ONE out of MILLIONS of Blacks who are serious about chess. If there are only a thousand Blacks worldwide who are serious about chess I would NOT be surprised. Michael Jordan has more to do with normal distributions than Maurice Ashley. Jordan was one out of possibly a million Blacks who were serious about basketball. Garry Kasparov has more to do with normal distributions than Maurice Ashley. He comes from a pervasive culture of chess in Russia. the only prominent chess culture amongst Blacks is in the parks in Brooklyn where Ashley grew up. Maurice Ashley is one in thousands or HUNDREDS. In fact, if you factor in the fact that he didn't get serious about chess until he was a mid teen, he comes from an even smaller group! He is one out of possibly only hundreds of Black players and he became one of the top 470 players in the entire world. |

Jan-03-08 | | DarthStapler: Wait a second.... He's the only African American grandmaster, but he is also Jamaican? I'm confused |
