MissScarlett: On first sight, I thought this was Tina Turner.
Aug-06-15  lost in space: I thought the same...and had a look
Aug-06-15  cro777: Tuna Tuncer is a 15-year-old boy, the Science High School from Izmir (Turkey) Grade 9 student.

Last December, he represented Turkey at the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad for teams in Gyõr (Hungary).

He is paticipating at the ongoing Turkish Chess Superleage as a member of Wesley So's team "Aquamatch". In Turkish Superleague the boards 7 and 8 are reserved for young players.

offramp: On board a shipping vessel a tuncer's job is to convince caught fish that they are being taken somewhere pleasant. Tuncing is a skill normally passed from father to son.
Aug-07-15  cro777: In Turkish, Tuna means "Danube river" and Tuncer means "man of bronze".

This is Statue of Bronze Man in Danube Park

alexmagnus: < In Turkish, Tuna means "Danube river" and Tuncer means "man of bronze".>

Why is the Danube named so differently in different languages?

Danube in English
Tuna in Turkish
Donau in German
Dunay in Russian
Dunav in Bulgarian
Danav in Bretonian
Tanay in Chuvash
Dounabis in Greek
Danubio in Spanish and Italian
Danubo in Esperanto
Duna in Hungarian

Probably only Moscow has even more language-dependent names :D

offramp: The word for "German" is very different in each of the European languages. Perhaps someone more erudite could make a list?

cro, you seem to know more about everyone in chess than anyone on this site. It's remarkable.

Aug-08-15  waustad: If "Tuna" is the Danube, it sounds like Donau and a lot like what I've heard on down the way. Where I lived nearby it was in German.

offramp: <sonia91> That is FANTASTIC. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

The Polish word is given as Niemcy, and that must be related to the name of Aron Nimzowitsch.

Aug-08-15  Catfriend: <offramp> Similarly, in Russian, the word for German people (as opposed to Germany itself) is <Nemtzy>.

offramp: The Spanish word, and Italian, for German is <tedesco>; that is related to "Deutsche".

It's odd for the adjective to be so different from the noun.

I agree. <Cro777> is brilliant and I urge all users to add him to your favourites list. I thought his username was based on that of one of my Masonic heroes, Aleister Crowley, who wrote an excellent book called <"777">. But <cro777> explains his username on his own page.

Aug-08-15  morfishine: <offramp> I offer my complete endorsement for this comment: <<<Cro777>> is brilliant and I urge all users to add him to your favourites list>. He is not only brilliant, but completely without bias, which is to me, much appreciative. <cro777> is open and engaging with players of all strength and never has a sour word for anyone. <cro777> is one of my favorite posters

Aug-08-15  john barleycorn: <<morfishine> & <offramp>> totally agree. <cro777> is a pleasant person and giving excellent analysis. A mix hard to find.
Aug-08-15  Fiona Macleod: CG I understand had deleted some of <cro777's> posts, however.
